Mother-in-law asked to look after the house, called a worker to break the safe and steal her son-in-law's money
The son-in-law and his daughter went back to their hometown for Tet so they asked their mother-in-law to help look after the house. Unexpectedly, this person called a worker to break the safe to steal the property and then staged a fake scene of the robbery.
On October 2, Can Tho City People's Court held a first-instance trial and sentenced defendant Tran Thi Thu Nga (50 years old; residing in Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city) to 7 years in prison for the crime of "Theft of property".
According to the indictment, on February 13, Ms. Nga’s daughter and son-in-law returned to Ca Mau for Tet and asked Ms. Nga to look after the house. With the intention of stealing property, Ms. Nga lied that she had forgotten the password and called a technician to break the safe. Ms. Nga took 40 million VND, 300 USD, 1 BVGLARI watch, 1 earring, and 2 rings from the safe.
Next, Ms. Nga went into her daughter and her husband's bedroom and messed up the furniture in the room, then went downstairs to unlock and leave the back door ajar and lock the front door to create a fake scene of a burglary. After that, Ms. Nga took the stolen items home to hide. The next day, she took the stolen money to go shopping for Tet. But on the way there, she had an accident, and Ms. Nga called her daughter to inform her that she had an accident and could not come to look after the house. On February 17, when her daughter and her husband returned home, they discovered that their property had been stolen, so they went to the police station to report it.

Through investigation and verification, Ms. Nga admitted that she was the one who stole her son-in-law’s property and handed it over to the investigation agency. According to the valuation conclusion, the total value of the property Ms. Nga stole was over 500 million VND.
In court, Mrs. Nga admitted her crime and expressed remorse. Mrs. Nga's son-in-law also said that because he did not know that his mother-in-law was the one who took the items, he reported it to the police. If he had known, he would not have done so, and hoped that the jury would be lenient with his mother-in-law. Previously, the son-in-law had also filed a petition to drop the charges against Mrs. Nga.
