Important first steps for new drivers
To reduce stress, gain confidence and stay safe, new drivers should start with the simplest things when getting into the car.
Seat adjustment
![]() |
Adjust the seat so that your feet comfortably control both the brake and accelerator pedals. The driver's seat can be adjusted forward and backward, as well as up and down. Some cars have electronic controls (usually on the left side of the seat). Older cars often have mechanical controls under the seat. |
Get familiar with the accelerator and brake pedals
![]() |
After getting a comfortable sitting position, it is necessary to "test" the accelerator and brake pedals. The distance, the delay of the accelerator pedal and the sensitivity of the brake pedal are not the same for each car. Only use the right foot to control both the accelerator and brake pedals, absolutely do not use one foot for the accelerator and the other for the brake. In addition, while driving, if you take your foot off the gas, you should immediately apply the brake or vice versa to prepare for the next situation. |
Adjust the mirrors
The mirror system consists of 3 positions: the rearview mirror allows the driver to see behind the windshield without having to look back, two outside mirrors to see behind the two sides of the car - warning of blind spots. Like the seat position, each person has a different convenient mirror viewing position. For the rearview mirrors, the driver can adjust them so that the view behind the windshield is as wide as possible. For the outside mirrors, looking over the shoulder, the driver should adjust the mirror position to have the widest angle possible to effectively eliminate blind spots. |
Remember to release the handbrake.

The handbrake is also known as the emergency brake. When the handbrake is applied, the wheels are locked to prevent the vehicle from rolling freely when parked. The driver must ensure that the handbrake is released before moving. |
Gear operation
![]() |
If you don't put the car in gear, your car won't move even if you step on the gas pedal hard (a mistake many new drivers make when accelerating). For new drivers, unfamiliar operations can make them fumble when shifting gears. Stay calm, put the gear stick in position D, the car will slowly move when you release the brake pedal and switch to the gas pedal. Similarly, position N is for temporary stop. When you want to park the car, put the gear stick back in position. |
How to read parameters on the control panel
![]() |
Among the parameters displayed on the dashboard, the speedometer is the most important. It shows how fast the car is going. Next is the tachometer, which shows how the car's engine is working. Most of these clocks will warn in red starting at 6,000 or 7,000 rpm, at which point the driver should reduce the accelerator. The fuel gauge shows how much fuel is left in the car. It can be displayed as an "F" and "E" (Full and Empty) needle or digitally. Similarly, the engine temperature gauge moves between "H" and "C" (Hot and Cool). When this needle is in the middle position, the engine is in ideal condition. |
