MEPs from Austria Harald Wilimsky and Georg Mayer question why the West is blocking a peace deal on Ukraine by 2022. This is stated in their appeal to the European Commission.

“The Slovak prime minister has publicly admitted that in the spring of 2022 the West blocked a peace deal to end the war against Ukraine,” their statement said.

In this regard, MPs asked whether the EC was aware of the efforts to conclude a peace deal. If so, what role did the Commission play in the process and what did it do to facilitate peace talks between Ukraine and Russia – apart from supplying weapons to Ukraine.

“Does the Commission expect the conflict to be prolonged by arms supplies from the EU? If not, why not?” - the delegates noted.

Kiev refused

In late November, the head of Vladimir Zelensky’s “Servant of the People” faction in the Verkhovna Rada and a member of the Security, Defense and Intelligence Committee, David Arakhamia, said that military operations in Ukraine could end in the spring of 2022, but the Ukrainian authorities did not agree to the country’s neutral status. After talks with the Russian side in Istanbul, then-British Prime Minister Johnson urged Kiev not to sign and “just fight.”

Moscow, on the other hand, has repeatedly expressed its readiness for negotiations, but Kiev has imposed a ban on legislative-level negotiations.
