Crops that bring in billions of dollars in income in Giang Son Dong
(Baonghean.vn) -Implementing the project of converting crop and livestock structure in the period 2010-2015, up to now, Giang Son Dong commune (Do Luong) has basically successfully converted, bringing high economic efficiency to farmers.
Giang Son Dong is a mountainous commune, the terrain is not favorable for agricultural development when "it is drought before the sun - flood before the rain". Meanwhile, the irrigation system has not met the irrigation needs of the people. Faced with this situation, the commune has gradually changed the crop structure to overcome difficulties, promote the advantages of the mountainous area to bring effective income to farmers.

Commercial sugarcane has affirmed its strength on the barren lands and hills in Giang Son Dong. |
Initially, the commune selected key crops with high economic efficiency and applied them to production. From there, some households boldly converted ineffective rice-growing land to growing other crops on highland;
Low-lying areas are converted to aquaculture; some areas previously specialized in growing corn are converted to build high-income field models such as growing off-season sugarcane, squash, gourd, stevia, chili peppers, etc.
Thanks to that, Giang Son Dong commune has initially created highly effective agricultural products, especially sugarcane with an annual income of nearly 9 billion VND; many households have an income of 200 million VND/ha of sugarcane per year.
In 2015 alone, after implementing the policy of "Land consolidation and plot exchange", the commune converted 120 hectares of fertile land and unstable rice land to grow sugarcane, corn of all kinds and suitable vegetables.

In order for the project to change the crop structure to be truly effective, the Party Committee of Giang Son Dong commune has requested Party cell committees at all levels to correctly assess the current situation of each region and each field to develop resolutions and implementation plans, and plan each production area based on the characteristics and strengths of each region.
In addition, the Party Committee promoted the role and responsibility of the Party cell committee, did a good job of motivating, praising and propagating, and had measures to direct the implementation of the proposed plan; directed cluster leaders and point leaders to go directly to each Party cell to meet, discuss, guide, and urge inspection of the implementation of crop restructuring.
From now until 2020, Giang Son Dong commune strives to transform towards improving economic efficiency, gradually reducing rice growing area, increasing corn growing area and other vegetables while ensuring food security.
Focus on livestock development, gradually increase the number of cattle herds, develop farm economy and stabilize forest gardens. It is expected that by 2020, the average food per capita will reach 325 kg/year, annual raw material forest planting will reach 70 hectares and strive to reach the new rural goal by 2019.

In 2016, the commune directed the coordination with the district agricultural extension station to build a fruit tree planting model (specifically grapefruit trees) with a scale of 0.5 ha in Thinh Dong hamlet. From there, promote economic efficiency and propaganda work to replicate the model throughout the commune.
Taking advantage of the advantages and taking advantage of support sources, Giang Son Dong commune has been gradually changing its appearance. It can be affirmed that changing the crop structure is one of the effective ways in the current climate change situation and is the right direction for mountainous communes with unstable rice growing areas like Giang Son Dong, thereby improving economic efficiency and increasing income for farmers in a sustainable way.
Comrade Nguyen Quang Thanh - Vice Chairman of Giang Son Dong Commune People's Committee: "Ensuring food security is the most important condition. Therefore, it is necessary to use land funds reasonably in the direction of intensive cultivation, bringing high-yield varieties into production. Areas with key crops must be selected and focused on large-scale production from the beginning. If the potential for commodity development is still large and conditions are available, there should be projects and policies to encourage expansion. In addition, science and technology is an important factor in improving growth quality. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the application and transfer of science and technology to production. This is considered the most important breakthrough to promote the process of transforming crop structure". |
