Chicken-shaped dragon fruit, South American watermelon pots, ornamental grapefruit... are unique products prepared by gardeners for the 2017 Lunar New Year market.

1. Dragon fruit bonsai in the shape of an animal

This year, to diversify the market, dragon fruit grown in pots is created in many different shapes. If in previous years, most of the dragon fruit were simply curved, now customers can put animals according to their preferences. In addition to curving into the shape of a dragon, gardeners also make it into the shape of a chicken or other animals that customers like.

Mr. Hoang, the owner of a bonsai garden in Cho Gao, Tien Giang, said that his garden can supply the market with more than 10,000 pots, and so far, customers have placed orders for the Dinh Dau New Year. Most of them are wholesalers, mainly ordering dragon fruit bonsai pots.

“For normal ornamental dragon fruit pots, the wholesale price depends on the number of fruits, for example, the 9-fruit type is 120,000 VND, the 68-fruit type is up to 1.1 million VND. As for ornamental animal-shaped pots, the price varies depending on their difficulty, usually the wholesale price is up to several million VND, and the retail price can be tens of millions of VND,” said Mr. Hoang.

2. Ornamental grapefruit

Bonsai grapefruit trees are not as tall as regular grapefruit trees and have quite an eye-catching shape. This year's Tet in Khanh Hoa, bonsai grapefruit pots have attracted quite a lot of visitors. The grapefruit pots are not too tall but within reach. On average, each tree produces 5-8 fruits, some trees produce 10-12 fruits. It is expected that in about 2 months, gardeners can sell them to traders in Ho Chi Minh City, the price ranges from 1.5-2 million VND per pot.

According to local pomelo growers, to have a beautiful pomelo pot, you need to be meticulous, especially when they bear fruit, they need to be carefully protected to avoid pests. Currently, the whole Dien Khanh commune (Khanh Hoa) has over 10 households growing pomelos, mainly supplying the Ho Chi Minh City market. Pomelo trees worth millions of dong must meet the following standards: each tree has 5 or more fruits, the fruits are even, the color and leaves are green...

3. Pepino melon pot

Pepino melon, also known as South American watermelon, weighs only 200-300 grams each, and has been introduced to Vietnam for nearly a year. This melon has an oval shape, when young, it looks very similar to a tomato, can be cut into slices and mixed into salads, eaten with meat, fish, etc. When ripe, the melon is creamy yellow, has purple stripes, soft flesh, and is sweet and fragrant like cantaloupe or honeydew melon.

With a rather attractive shape, on the contrary, small and cute, so this Tet, to contribute a strange product to the flower pots, Mr. Nguyen Dinh, who brought this melon variety to Da Lat (Lam Dong) to grow, said that he will supply the market with 500 flower pots. The expected wholesale price is 100,000-150,000 VND per pot.

"There are also some traders who want to buy it to sell for Tet, but I have not yet made a decision. Currently, the tree is growing and developing well. By Tet, it will be green and lush with fruit, looking quite eye-catching. After displaying it for Tet, customers can use it as fruit or mix it into salads," said Mr. Dinh.
