Friday (December 17) marks 10 years since Kim Jong-un took power as leader of North Korea. Although initially considered inexperienced, Kim has now asserted his own leadership style.

AP news agency has reviewed key events in Kim Jong-un's decade of leadership of North Korea.

Become a successor

January 8, 1984:Kim Jong-unwas born, the third son and youngest child of Kim Jong Il.

September 2010:North Korean media reported that Kim Jong-un was promoted to four-star general.

October 2010:Kim Jong-un made his first public appearance at a military parade, standing next to his father on the podium. Kim Jong-un smiled, clapped and waved as soldiers, tanks and missiles passed by.

December 17, 2011:President Kim Jong Il died at the age of 69, but the official announcement was not made until two days later.

December 19, 2011:North Korean state television has announced information about the funeral of President Kim Jong Il. Kim Jong-un's name appeared at the top of the list of the National Funeral Committee and he was called "the great successor" by the country's media.

December 30, 2011:Kim Jong-un was appointed Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, his first post after his father's death. In the following months, he took on additional leadership positions in the Workers' Party and the National Defense Commission.

Decisions on nuclear and missile issues

December 2012:North Korea claims to have put a satellite into orbit, but international observers say it has successfully launched a long-range rocket. The United Nations considers this a test of banned missile technology.

February 2013:North Korea conducts its third nuclear test. This is the first atomic bomb test under leader Kim Jong-un.

2016:North Korea conducted two more nuclear tests and successfully launched a second satellite.

July 4, 2017:North Korea test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile that Kim Jong-un called a “gift package” from North Korea to the United States on Independence Day.

September 2017:North Korea conducts its sixth nuclear test, which it claims is a hydrogen bomb that can be mounted on an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Important diplomatic milestones

April 2018:Mr. Kim Jong-un held talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. Mr. Kim and Mr. Moon then held two more summits.

June 2018:Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump met in Singapore. This is the first summit between the two leaders of the US and North Korea since the end of the 1950-1953 Korean War. Mr. Kim pledged to work towards complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula but did not provide a detailed disarmament roadmap.

February 2019:The second summit between Mr. Kim and the US President took place in Hanoi.

June 2019:North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met US President Donald Trump for the third time at the inter-Korean border but failed to make any breakthrough.

Unsuccessful attempt

January 2021:At the first Workers' Party Congress in five years, Kim Jong-un admitted his economic development plan had failed.

April 2021:North Korea is facing its worst-ever situation due to the pandemic, persistent sanctions and natural disasters, Kim Jong-un said.
