Milestones in HIV/AIDS Prevention
(Baonghean.vn) - World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1 every year to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic caused by HIV infection and to commemorate victims who have died from HIV/AIDS.
1959:The world's first HIV/AIDS infected person was discovered in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
June 5, 1981: The first case appeared in the US. The unusual immunodeficiency disease that can cause death was discovered in 5 homosexual men in Los Angeles (California, USA).

1982Scientists believe that the disease is transmitted by a virus through the blood, the genital tract, and from mother to fetus.
The new disease was called Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Gay men formed the first AIDS advocacy groups in the United States.
1985: Rock Hudson - The first celebrity to die of AIDS; Ryan White became a famous case of HIV/AIDS in children after being expelled from school for having the disease; Actress Elizabeth Taylor became the founding President of the AmFA International Foundation (American Foundation for AIDS Research).

December 1, 1988: The first World AIDS Day was born with the theme of Communication; The US FDA approved the first rapid HIV test; AIDS became the leading cause of death in American men aged 25-44.
From 1991 - 1992: The red ribbon becomes a symbol of AIDS awareness; Magic Johnson, an American basketball player who was addicted to drugs, announces that he is HIV positive; Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the British rock band Queen, dies of AIDS; Researcher David Ho suggests that treatment can eradicate HIV from the body - He is wrong, but the number of AIDS deaths in the US drops by more than 40%.
From 1996-1997: Breakthrough in HIV/AIDS treatment, combination of AIDS drugs - highly active antiretroviral therapy, or HAART; FDA approved new classes of drugs that make HIV treatment safer and more effective; AIDS became the leading cause of death worldwide among people aged 15-59.

From 1998-2000:HAART has been found to have serious side effects.
From 2001-2002:United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan launches the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
2009:There were 2.7 million new HIV infections and 2 million AIDS deaths in the previous year; life expectancy for people with HIV in the United States is now higher, approaching that of the general population (78 years).
From 2011- 2014:The US FDA approved the combination of emtricitabine/tenofovir (brand name Truvada) to reduce the risk of HIV in people at high risk.
2016:World AIDS Day with the theme 'Early HIV testing - Towards the 90-90-90 target by 2020''.
