“All three submarines Seawolf, Connecticut and Jimmy Carter are specially designed to operate under ice and search for missile-launching submarines” - according to the US magazine Popular Mechanics.
The publication called it "a show of force with a big message: Russian submarines can launch missiles from areas that US forces cannot reach."
In March, exercises were held with the participation of the Russian Navy. At the same time, satellite images in the area where the submarines surfaced also showed a “giant hole” that had formed – probably after a torpedo launch from one of the nuclear submarines.
In January 2020, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry said,Nuclear submarines that act as strategic weapons carriers are using unguided rockets (LRS). According to the newspaper, they will create ice holes for ballistic missiles to pass through.
