Sweet potato leaves, coriander, pineapple, longan, or bitter melon... these are some of the vegetables and fruits that can be dangerous to the fetus if pregnant women consume them improperly.

Pineapple

Pregnant women in their first trimester should avoid eating or drinking too much pineapple juice because this fruit can cause uterine contractions leading to miscarriage; it can also cause diarrhea or allergies. This is because fresh pineapple contains bromelain, which softens the uterus and produces substances that can induce abortion. However, after the first trimester, pregnant women can consume a moderate and appropriate amount of pineapple.

Wild apples

Hawthorn berries have a sour, astringent, and sweet taste that is very suitable for pregnant women experiencing morning sickness, but this fruit is not actually good for pregnant women. According to many records, hawthorn berries have a stimulating effect on the uterus, which can promote uterine contractions, causing miscarriage and premature birth.

Longan fruit

Longan is a delicious fruit with a fragrant aroma and sweet taste. However, it is also a fruit that pregnant women should avoid during pregnancy. Pregnant women often experience internal heat and constipation; eating too much longan can increase internal heat, cause uterine contractions, bleeding, abdominal pain, and even harm the fetus, potentially leading to miscarriage.

Green papaya

Numerous studies show that green or unripe papaya contains many enzymes and latex, which can cause uterine contractions and consequently lead to miscarriage. Furthermore, green papaya also contains prostaglandins and oxytocin, substances the body needs to initiate childbirth. Therefore, if a pregnant woman eats green papaya before her due date, she may experience a miscarriage.

Peach

Peaches are sweet and have a warming effect, so eating too many peaches can easily cause bleeding in pregnant women. The fuzz on the peach skin can also easily cause itching and a burning sensation in the throat.

Bitter gourd (bitter melon)

Bitter gourd is also rich in vitamin B, iron, zinc, potassium, manganese, and magnesium, so this fruit plays an important role in providing nutrients to the body and boosting immunity.

While bitter melon offers many benefits, excessive or overuse is not advisable. Its bitterness can strongly stimulate uterine and stomach contractions, potentially leading to miscarriage in women with a retroverted uterus, uterine scarring, or those who have undergone multiple abortions.

Purslane

This vegetable is highly nutritious and also a very good medicinal herb. Purslane is cooling in nature, sour in taste, and has the effect of clearing heat, cooling the blood, detoxifying, and eliminating worms. Purslane contains many vitamins and minerals, especially a very high amount of omega-3 fatty acids.

Purslane is easy to grow, easy to care for, and readily available, making it a familiar food for many people. However, pregnant women should limit their consumption of purslane. This is because purslane can strongly stimulate the uterus and increase the frequency of contractions, which can easily lead to miscarriage and endanger women's health.

Vietnamese coriander

Vietnamese coriander (rau răm) is an easy-to-grow herb commonly used in many Vietnamese dishes. It has a pungent, spicy flavor and a strong aroma, and is considered warming in nature. When eaten raw, it warms the stomach, aids digestion, and dispels cold.

However, consuming large amounts of Vietnamese coriander during the first three months of pregnancy can increase the risk of blood loss, especially since Vietnamese coriander contains substances that cause uterine contractions, leading to miscarriage. Therefore, it's best to avoid eating too much Vietnamese coriander while pregnant.

Sweet potato leaves

Sweet leaf (Sauropus androgynus) is cooling and sweet in taste, with properties that help clear heat, detoxify, enrich blood, and promote bowel movements. Sweet leaf contains vitamin K, a rare vitamin in the plant kingdom. It also contains a quantity of plant protein, iron, manganese, and vitamin A.

However, spinach contains papaverine, a substance found in opium poppies, which relaxes the smooth muscles of blood vessels to relieve pain and lower blood pressure. Consuming more than 30mg of fresh spinach can cause uterine contractions and easily lead to miscarriage. The Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia 2002 clearly states: "Do not use papaverine in pregnant women."
