Since the beginning of 2022, nearly 10 names have been announced by car manufacturers to be "terminated" from the Vietnamese market for many reasons such as sluggish sales, not meeting emission standards...

  • Ford EcoSport

The small SUV from the American brand that once "made waves" in the B-SUV segment, Ford EcoSport, had to say goodbye to the Vietnamese market from the end of February 2022.

Ford Group is restructuring in India from 2021, leading to changes in factories and component sources there, affecting the production of some Ford models, including EcoSport.

Moreover, since 2020, the Vietnamese auto market has seen many new entrants appear and take up best-selling positions in this segment such as Kia Seltos and Toyota Corolla Cross, causing Ford EcoSport to gradually lose its position and no longer be competitive.

Honda Brio

Honda Brio is one of three models in the A-class urban car segment that will be discontinued in Vietnam in 2022. Honda Brio was forced to stop distribution in the Vietnamese market because the engine did not meet Euro 5 emission standards as required by the Government, but only stopped at Euro 4.

It is still unclear whether this A-size hatchback will return with a new emission standard engine block, but if it does return, the selling price will likely be higher than the current VND454 million.

Toyota Wigo

The second model in the A-size hatchback segment in Vietnam to be discontinued is also a model from the Japanese brand, Toyota Wigo.

The reason Wigo left the Vietnamese auto market was that its engine did not meet Euro 5 emission standards. Furthermore, Wigo sales also gradually declined when new competitors appeared such as Honda Brio and VinFast Fadil.

In 2021, Toyota Wigo sales reached only 2,492 vehicles, ranking last in the A-class urban car segment. Meanwhile, at the time of its launch in 2018, Wigo had an impressive start with sales of 1,500 vehicles in the first month.

Toyota Rush

In May 2022, the 7-seat SUV Toyota Rush was officially removed from Toyota's product catalog. Like Wigo, when it was first launched, Rush also created such a fever that it was often overpriced at dealerships.

The popularity of this 7-seat SUV model has also gradually decreased with the appearance of Toyota Avanza Premio and Veloz Cross. Because all 3 aim at the same demand for cheap 7-seat cars.

VinFast Fadil

In the A-class urban car segment, VinFast Fadil is probably the name that causes the most regret for Vietnamese consumers. It was discontinued, while Fadil has always been in the top best-selling car models for many months.

The reason VinFast Fadil stopped selling is known because VinFast has stopped producing all car models using internal combustion engines to focus entirely on the production and development of electric vehicles, since 2022.

VinFast Lux A2.0

Also a gasoline-powered product of VinFast, the luxury sedan Lux A2.0 has also stopped production to focus on electric vehicles. Currently, VinFast has stopped accepting new orders for Lux A2.0 and focused on paying off previously placed orders.

First launched in 2019, VinFast Lux A2.0 quickly gained a foothold in the Vietnamese automobile market, putting great pressure on competitors such as Toyota Camry, Mazda 6 or Honda Accord...

VinFast Lux SA2.0

The last model in the trio of VinFast "home" cars, Lux SA2.0, also caused many regrets for Vietnamese customers when it had to say goodbye to the Vietnamese market from this year 2022.

VinFast Lux SA2.0's sales at the time it was on the market were not inferior to any competitor. The appearance of Lux SA2.0 since 2019 has also helped the 7-seat SUV segment become more competitive.

Toyota Hilux

Since the beginning of 2022, Toyota Vietnam has stopped importing the Hilux pickup model, because the new vehicle is only equipped with a Euro 4 engine, while the new emission standard in Vietnam is Euro 5. In terms of sales, in 2021, sales of this pickup model reached 4,413 vehicles, ranking 2nd in the segment, just behind the best-selling model in the segment, the Ford Ranger with 15,650 vehicles.

Therefore, it is likely that Toyota Hilux will only temporarily leave the domestic market and may return in the near future with a new emission standard engine block.
