The most cruel foods in the world
Live octopus, frog sashimi, or monkey brains are dishes that terrify many diners because of the cruel way they are prepared and enjoyed.
Some of the specialties below can become terrifying for diners from the first time they enjoy them.
Octopus
Live octopus is served in restaurants in California and New York, USA. Diners will eat the octopus's wriggling tentacles whole. In Korea, live octopus is very popular. People sometimes chew and swallow the octopus whole instead of cutting it into small pieces and eating it.
Baby mouse
In China, a delicacy is made from newborn rats. Diners can pierce the rats with skewers and dip them into boiling oil before eating.
Live fish
A raw fish dish originating from Taiwan, the whole fish is fried but the head is wrapped in a wet cloth to keep it alive. The fish is then topped with sauce and placed on a plate. When diners touch the head with their chopsticks, they will still see it moving.
monkey brain
Monkeys are a species close to humans, but in Asia they are still the source of a dish that horrifies many people - live monkey brains. The dish is designed on a special table where the monkey's head will be smashed to expose the brain.
Frog Sashimi
Seafood is an ingredient in sushi and sashimi in Japan, but frogs are also used. The frogs are fattened and transported to restaurant kitchens, where they are kept alive until a customer orders. The chef stabs, beheads and skins the frogs, chops up the body and legs, and puts them on a plate of ice, a few slices of lemon, and the customer enjoys them with fish sauce.
Sparrow
Sparrow hunting has been banned in France since 1999, but the practice is still illegal. Once caught, the sparrows are fattened to the point of being unable to move. The plump birds are soaked in wine before being grilled for eight minutes and served on a plate. Diners traditionally eat the dish by covering their heads with handkerchiefs.
