Maggie Q, Linh Dan, and Le Thi Hiep... are all actresses with Vietnamese blood who have made their mark in many Hollywood and European films.

Linh Dan

Linh Đan is one of the renowned Vietnamese-born actresses in the world of art films. Having moved from Saigon to France with her family in 1975, she gained attention for her role in the film Indochine (1992) by French director Régis Wargnier.

This film won the Oscar for "Best Foreign Language Film". Her role as the adopted daughter of a female rubber plantation owner in Saigon during the French colonial period earned Linh Đan a nomination for "Most Promising Actress" from the French Academy.

In 2005, Linh Dan returned to film after 10 years working in the business sector, following her family's advice. In the film Mr. Nobody (2009), Linh Dan played one of three leading female roles – the wife of a man over 100 years old, Nemo Nobody. She acted alongside stars Jared Leto and Diane Krudger. The film premiered at the 66th Venice Film Festival and received critical acclaim.

Thuy Trang

Thuy Trang was born in 1973 in Saigon and moved to the United States with her family when she was three years old. She studied civil engineering but after graduating from university, she developed a passion for acting.

In 1993, Thuy Trang was cast in the television series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. In the series, she played the yellow Ranger Trini Kwan, who had a bright smile and impressive martial arts skills. Thuy Trang had been studying martial arts since the ninth grade. After two years and nearly 90 episodes of the hit series that swept North America in the early 1990s, Thuy Trang and two other actors left the cast due to disagreements over compensation.

She continued to participate in film projects including Spy Hard and The Crow: City of Angels in the late 1990s. In 2001, on a fateful bus journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles, Thuy Trang died in a tragic accident.

Le Thi Hiep

In early 1990, Le Thi Hiep was a physics student at the University of California, USA. She happened to go with friends to audition for Oliver Stone's film Heaven & Earth, and beat out over 1,000 other applicants to become the lead actress in the famous film about the Vietnam War.

In the film, Hiep plays a Vietnamese woman aged 13 to 38 who experiences a series of ups and downs and misfortunes. Director Oliver Stone was so impressed with Le Thi Hiep that he didn't need to require her to take acting lessons and just let her perform naturally. Hiep's performance in the film, along with other American and Asian stars, was highly praised by the North American press after the film's release.

Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan remarked, "This is a talented amateur actress." After Heaven & Earth, Le Thi Hiep acted in several more films, but none achieved significant fame. Besides acting, the actress, born in 1969, also owns a restaurant in Venice, Italy.

Do Thi Hai Yen

In 2001, Do Thi Hai Yen beat out 2,000 domestic and international applicants to be chosen for the lead role in the film The Quiet American (directed by Phillip Noyce). This marked the first time in Vietnamese history that a native Vietnamese actress played an English-speaking character in a Hollywood film.

In this film, she plays a Vietnamese woman caught in a love triangle with a British journalist and a young American man. Two world-renowned actors, Sir Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser, co-starred with Hai Yen. Her simple, charming, and authentically Vietnamese beauty, along with her natural acting style, was praised by the international press. Hai Yen was invited to participate in numerous international film festivals. The film was later recognized by critics as one of the 10 best films of 2002.

Following this film, Do Thi Hai Yen became one of the most highly regarded female stars in Vietnamese cinema. Recently, the beautiful actress returned with a role in the film "Father, Son and..." directed by Phan Dang Di.
