Young people turn poor land into advantage

Born in a poor rural area in hamlet 15, Nghia Mai commune, a remote area of Nghia Dan district, Nguyen Van Tuan (born in 1990) did not have the conditions to pursue his dream of studying at university like his peers. After graduating from high school, Tuan did not go anywhere but decided to start a career on his hometown - a land that has always been considered rocky and barren in Phu Quy area.
After researching, Tuan boldly converted more than 6 sao of his family's sugarcane land to grow tangerines and chili peppers to earn short-term income and support long-term income. Fortunately, at this time, the Nghia Mai Commune Youth Union opened training courses to transfer science and technology and organized for youth union members to visit economic development models. Thanks to understanding the techniques and planting seasons, Tuan's first chili crop was a big success, with a selling price of 30,000 - 60,000 VND/kg. After deducting all expenses, Tuan earned over 60 million VND.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan shared: “Implementing the policy of converting crops, in winter our family also applied the conversion from other crops to hot peppers. We see that it brings high income for the family, specifically last year we also earned 150 million VND and in the future we will expand the area”.

In Nghia An commune, a representative of the movement to establish a career is Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong (born in 1984) of Hamlet 10. Mr. Cuong is a typical Catholic youth in the movement to do good business. After graduating from high school, he was determined to start a business, build the economy and get rich in the place where he was born. With the encouragement of his family, friends and the help of the youth union members, in 2004 he boldly borrowed capital from the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development to grow grass, build barns and buy 10 dairy cows.
“In the early days of farming, I encountered many technical difficulties, frequent epidemics, and erratic weather. However, I tried to learn knowledge and experience through newspapers, radio, documents, and accumulated knowledge from visiting local dairy farm models to apply to my herd,” said Mr. Cuong.
Up to now, Mr. Cuong's family has more than 15 cows, of which 7 cows are giving milk every day, milked twice a day, about 100kg each day. He imports this amount of milk for the Vinamilk branch in Thai Hoa town, bringing in about 70 million VND in monthly income.

Currently, Nghia Dan has 20,000 youth union members; of which nearly 6,000 are in the locality. To promote the movement of accompanying young people to start their own businesses, gather and replicate typical models in economic development, and increase the rate of youth union members having jobs, every year the District Union organizes over 30 science and technology transfer classes for over 2,000 youth union members; establishes economic development youth clubs to help union members have conditions to share experiences.
Mr. Phan Van Hien - Secretary of Nghia Dan District Youth Union said: The District Youth Union Executive Committee focuses on supporting youth union members in economic development. The District Youth Union Executive Committee organizes the transfer of science and technology to help youth gain knowledge of cultivation and animal husbandry. Organizes for youth union members to visit and study effective models and practices inside and outside the district. Creates conditions for youth to access capital sources from banks for economic development. Currently, the District Youth Union has established an economic development club to share and help members develop together.
