Mistakes to Avoid When Using Windows

There are many people using Windows on mobile devices, however, not everyone knows that it is easy to make some mistakes that waste time and even have counterproductive effects on this operating system.

The article below will give some common mistakes while using Windows that you should know and avoid.

Clear cache regularly to speed up system

You can free up disk space by running an application like CCleaner or using the Windows Disk Cleanup tool. In some cases, you may find that an old computer speeds up when you delete a large number of useless files.

However, running CCleaner or similar utilities every day to clear your browser cache will not speed up your system. It will slow down your browsing because the browser will be forced to reload the data again and rebuild the cache that you regularly clear.

If you have CCleaner or a similar program installed and running it regularly with default settings, you are actually slowing down your web browser. Consider preventing these programs from clearing your web browser cache.

Enable ReadyBoost to speed up your computer

Windows will still prompt you to enable ReadyBoost when you insert a USB or memory card. On modern computers, this is completely pointless - ReadyBoost won't actually speed up your computer if you have at least 1GB of RAM. If you have a very old computer with a paltry amount of RAM like 512MB, ReadyBoost might help.

Open Disk Defragmenter yourself

Modern versions of Windows have the ability to defragment your file system while other programs are running, and this process happens automatically. If you have been opening Disk Defragmenter every week and clicking the Defragment button, this is no longer necessary; Windows will do it for you unless you tell it not to run on a schedule.

Disable virtual memory (Pagefile) to increase performance

When Windows runs out of free space in RAM, it moves data from memory to virtual memory on the hard drive. When your computer runs out of memory, it slows down, and it can either move data to the pagefile or read data from it. As long as you have enough RAM, your computer can still run fine without the pagefile. However, if you don't have enough RAM, Windows will only use it when it's really needed. Many tests have found that disabling the pagefile doesn't improve performance.

Enable CPU cores in MSConfig

Some websites suggest that Windows may not be using all of your CPU cores or that you can speed up your boot time by increasing the number of CPU cores during boot. They direct you to the MSConfig application where you can select an option to increase the number of cores used. In reality, Windows always uses the maximum number of cores your CPU has.

Technically, only one core is used at the beginning of the boot process, the remaining cores are quickly activated. Uncheck the Enable CPU Cores option in MSConfig. This is just an option that allows you to set multi-core mode, so it is useful if you want Windows to use only one core on a multi-core system.

Clean Prefetch to speed up Startup

Windows keeps track of running programs and creates .pf files in its Prefetch folder. The Prefetch feature acts as a cache—when you open an application, Windows checks this Prefetch folder, looks at the .pf file, and uses it as a guide to start preloading data that the application will use. This helps your applications launch faster.

If you regularly clean out the Prefetch folder, not only will programs take longer to open because they won't be preinstalled, Windows will have to spend time recreating all the .pf files. You can also change the PrefetchParameters setting to disable Prefetch, but there's no reason to do that. Windows will take care of it on its own.
