This plant is not considered a food, but in fact, cactus is one of the healthiest foods due to its richness in vitamins and nutrients.
The nopal cactus, also known as the bunny ear cactus, is a staple food in Latin America.
They provide a significant amount of fiber to the body, reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and prevent the risk of diabetes.
Here are seven health benefits of cacti.
1. Reduce cholesterol
Research from the University of Vienna has shown that eating cactus leaves helps reduce cholesterol levels in the body.
French scientists also supported this conclusion after testing 68 women eating cactus leaves for four weeks - the amount of cholesterol and fat in their bodies both decreased.
This effect of cactus is also said to effectively reduce the risk of heart disease.
2. Cure diabetes
High blood sugar levels can lead to serious illnesses such as diabetes, stroke or heart disease.
Eating cactus leaves will help reduce blood sugar levels in obese or diabetic patients.
A study by the University of Vienna on 24 non-obese patients who ate cactus leaves showed that their blood sugar levels decreased by 11%, proving the therapeutic effects of cactus on diabetics.
3. Fight cancer
Cactus leaves contain phenolics and flavonoids, two powerful antioxidant compounds.
These substances help protect healthy cells from free radicals that can cause heart disease and cancer.
The June 2009 issue of Plant Food for Human Nutrition reported that chemical compounds in cacti slow the growth of colon, liver, breast and prostate cancer cells without negatively affecting other healthy cells.
4. Improve digestion
Eating cactus will aid in the digestive process in humans. Nopal cactus will reduce fat accumulation under the skin, increase the body's ability to retain water, and promote intestinal activity.
This fiber-rich food also reduces carcinogens and improves digestive health.
5. Weight loss
Cactus is a low-calorie food that is rich in amino acids, vitamins and minerals.
That's why it's often chosen by people who want to lose weight. With 17 amino acids, including eight essential ones, cactus provides a great source of energy while containing only 16 calories per 100g.
6. Protect brain cells
The juice and fruit of the cactus contain the compound quercetin 3-methyl, a flavonoid with significant neuroprotective effects.
This compound will protect nerve cells in the brain, thereby protecting the brain from damage.
7. Reduce inflammation
Cactus contains anti-inflammatory substances that are beneficial to the muscular, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and arterial systems; and also contains plant flavonoids that help neutralize harmful compounds to cells and reduce pain.
Cactus also contains anti-inflammatory properties, reduces swelling and prevents white blood cell migration.
How to prepare cactus
Both cactus leaves and fruits are edible, but improper preparation can leave them dry and unpalatable. Here are two easy cactus dishes to make.
Grilled Cactus
Wash the cactus leaves and scrape off the thorns and skin. Place the peeled leaves on the grill for 10-12 minutes, occasionally turning and brushing both sides with olive oil.
Arizona style scrambled eggs with cactus
After removing the spines and outer skin of the cactus leaves, chop them into small pieces. Saute the cactus leaves in butter for 5 minutes and then remove.
