1. Former President Bill Clinton's three visits to Vietnam

In November 2000, the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton, his wife Hillary and daughter Chelsea visited Vietnam, 25 years after the end of the war. The visit laid the foundation for the normalization of Vietnam-US relations. His trip to Vietnam was warmly welcomed by many people.
During that trip, President Bill Clinton used two lines from the Tale of Kieu to talk about the relationship between the two countries: "The lotus fades and the chrysanthemum blooms again - Sorrow is long and the days are short, winter has turned to spring."

After this trip of Mr. Clinton, Vietnam and the US had their first bilateral trade agreement. President Bill Clinton also gave a speech at Hanoi National University and visited an elementary school in Ho Chi Minh City.
He returned to Vietnam for the second time in December 2006 as Chairman of the Bill Clinton Foundation during a visit to Asian countries to strengthen cooperation in HIV/AIDS prevention programs.

Former President Clinton called on Vietnamese youth to talk more about HIV/AIDS, reduce fear and increase understanding of the disease of the century, and avoid discriminating against people infected with this disease.
In November 2010, he made his third visit to Vietnam to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the normalization of Vietnam-US relations.

Six years after his predecessor Bill Clinton's trip,On November 17, 2006, President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush arrived in Hanoi, beginning an official visit to Vietnam and attending the 14th APEC Asia-Pacific Cooperation Summit.

President Bush and President Nguyen Minh Triet led delegations from both countries to hold talks on many issues such as strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fields of investment, trade, security, humanitarian aid, development aid, and regional and international issues of concern to both countries such as counter-terrorism, nuclear weapons, etc.
During 2 days (November 18 and 19, 2006), President Bush attended activities within the framework of the 14th APEC Conference and a series of sideline activities, and attended the US-ASEAN Summit.

President Obama departed for Vietnam on May 21, 2016. In Hanoi, Mr. Obama attended many meetings and events with senior Vietnamese leaders. He delivered a speech on Vietnam-US relations and met with members of civil society.
President Obama then traveled to Ho Chi Minh City, where he met with members of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI), entrepreneurs, and the business community.

4. President Donald Trump's visit in 2017

The White House press release on October 16 announced specific activities of President Donald Trump during his visit to Vietnam in November, including stops in Da Nang and Hanoi.
Mr. Trump will arrive in Da Nang on November 10 to attend and speak at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
After leaving Da Nang, Mr. Trump will arrive in Hanoi on November 11, beginning an official visit to Vietnam. In Hanoi, he will meet with President Tran Dai Quang and other senior Vietnamese leaders.
