August 20, 1986:Part-time mail carrier Patrick Henry Sherrill shot and killed 14 postal workers in Edmund, Oklahoma, before committing suicide.

October 16, 1991:Gunman George Hennard (35 years old) drove his car into the wall of Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas. He shot and killed 23 people and then committed suicide.

April 16, 2007:23-year-old student Seung Hui Cho opened fire at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia, killing 32 people. The gunman then committed suicide.

November 5, 2009:US Army Major Nidal Hasan shot dead 13 people and injured 30 others at Fort Hood near Killeen, Texas. Hasan was a psychiatrist who was allegedly radicalized by a Muslim cleric. Hasan was later sentenced to death.

July 20, 2012:James Holmes shot and killed 12 people at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. He was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder and sentenced to 12 life sentences without parole.

December 14, 2012:Adam Lanza (20 years old) shot dead a total of 26 people, including 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Connecticut, then committed suicide.

September 16, 2013:Gunman Aaron Alexis (34 years old) shot dead 12 people and injured 3 others at the headquarters of the US Sea Systems Command in Washington, DC. He was later killed by police.

October 1, 2015:26-year-old student Christopher Harper-Mercer opened fire in a classroom at Umpqua College near Roseburg, Oregon. A teaching assistant and eight students were killed. After exchanging gunfire with police, the gunman committed suicide.

December 2, 2015:Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a married couple from Redlands, California, opened fire at an annual party at the San Bernardino Health Department, killing 14 people and injuring 22 others. One of the victims was of Vietnamese descent. Farook, who was born in the United States and is of Pakistani descent, also worked at the health department. His wife had pledged allegiance to the extremist organization Islamic State (IS) when she posted a video on Facebook before the shooting.

June 12, 2016:Orlando police have identified the gunman who carried out the deadly attack at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando as Omar S. Mateen, who an FBI official said had links to militant Islam, Reuters reported on June 12. Before being killed by police, the gunman killed at least 50 people and injured 53 others, according to Orlando's mayor.
