According to BBC, the explosion occurred at Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT), a federal bus station, near Times Square. The cause may have been a pipe bomb that exploded below the station.
Police have arrested a man suspected of involvement in the explosion. The suspect, who is in his 20s, was injured during the arrest but his life is not in danger. The suspect also had an unexploded device.
The incident left at least one person injured. Residents were asked to avoid the area while police worked.
US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident, according to the White House.
"There was a stampede on the stairs as people tried to get out," said Diego Fernandez, a passenger at PABT. "People were panicking, running and screaming."
