According to initial assessment, a gas tank exploded when it leaked and caused a fire in over 50 vehicles at the scene. Upon hearing the initial explosion, many curious people rushed to the scene to observe the incident, causing the number of casualties to increase. The injured were taken to the hospital by motorbike, because ambulances could not reach the scene of the explosion.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the explosion.

Households in Nigeria and even West Africa regularly have to buy gas for their daily cooking needs and gas-related accidents often occur when gas is not stored properly.
