The suspect (whose name was not disclosed) was hospitalized in critical condition and is under strict guard, although the suspect's motive remains unclear.

A passerby was also taken to the hospital for treatment and was later discharged.

The base commander, Colonel Charles Chip Brown, told local media: "The suspect was getting out of his vehicle and he had a weapon in his hand when the officers approached him."

Mr. Brown said he could not yet determine whether the suspect had fired any shots from the weapon in his hand.

Local officials said the FBI is coordinating its investigation into the incident with the Office of Special Investigations at Little Rock Air Force Base and local police.

However, according to Reuters, the FBI determined that the suspect acted alone and said there was no connection between the attack and terrorism.

Since the beginning of May, the US military has increased security at its bases due to concerns about terrorism. US authorities fear that Islamist militants will act on online calls from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) targeting US law enforcement and military personnel.
