The country's national wealth has been "almost wiped out" by the "catastrophic effects" of nearly five years of conflict, according to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research (SCPR). Economic losses are estimated at $255 billion.
The war has killed more than 470,000 civilians, both directly and indirectly. About 400,000 people died from violence, while the remaining 70,000 died from lack of health services, food, clean water, sanitation and adequate housing. The report also said that about 1.9 million people were injured. Life expectancy fell from 70 years in 2010 to just 55.4 years in 2015.
With the country in a "suppression, fear and fanaticism", problems such as extortion, theft and smuggling have caused the armed conflict to push the Syrian economy into a "black hole", especially oil which is an "important source of financial exploitation" for the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) and other armed groups.
A US-led coalition is trying to destroy IS in Syria and wants Bashar al-Assad out of power. But Russia and Iran are propping up Assad and fighting back against opponents from the opposition.
