The race for the Conservative Party leadership, as well as the position of British Prime Minister, continues to heat up, with Health Secretary Matt Hancock announcing his candidacy.

Speaking on BBC television, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he decided to run for Prime Minister because “in my heart” I believe that Britain needs a leader for tomorrow, not for today. According to him, Britain needs to successfully implement the Brexit process and he will do it.

“I don’t want a no-deal Brexit and we are working hard to avoid that. There is a majority in Parliament that is against a no-deal Brexit. So what we need to do is convince the majority to back a deal that ensures we leave the European Union, but in an organised, orderly way that supports the economy,” said Matt Hancock.

This also means that the list of potential candidates for the British Prime Minister's seat has been extended, with names such as former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for International Development Rory Stewart and former Labour Secretary Esther McVey. And according to observers, the list will continue to grow in the coming days.

The race to succeed Prime Minister Theresa May will officially begin in the week of June 10. The process will first take place within the Conservative Party group in Parliament. A series of ballots will select the two most popular candidates before putting them to a vote by the ruling party’s 120,000 members. Polls and research have shown that Conservative Party members are strongly in favour of Brexit and most of them are not opposed to the prospect of a no-deal exit.

Speaking at an economic conference in Switzerland, former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson declared on May 24 that Britain will definitely leave the European Union on October 31, with or without a deal.

After Margaret Thatcher, John Major and David Cameron, Theresa May is the fourth Conservative Prime Minister forced to leave 10 Downing Street early due to internal party divisions over Europe./.
