Farmers dump vegetables, Ministry of Agriculture "speeds up" handling
After dragon fruit, watermelon, and shallots fell dramatically in price, there was a surplus of live pigs. Now it is the turn of lilies, cucumbers, cabbage, kohlrabi, shallots, radishes, and peppercorns to be sold at such low prices that farmers are even forced to dump their vegetables into the river.
Ministry of Agriculture speaks out about farmers uprooting tons of vegetables
In Nghe An and Quang Nam, farmers have abandoned their vegetable fields without harvesting. Because the price of kohlrabi has dropped to only 1,000 VND/root, green onions 3,000 - 4,000 VND/kg, cabbage or other vegetables 1,000 VND/kg...
Even more miserable are the white radishes in Trang Viet commune, Me Linh district, Hanoi. The selling price at the field is only 500 VND/kg but still cannot find customers to sell. If in previous years, the people of Trang Viet commune were excited to load radishes onto trucks to sell, this year, several thousand tons were transported and dumped into the river to clean the fields and make room for new crops.
Or in Quang Nam, farmers are also struggling when the price of vegetables and fruits drops sharply. If before Tet, bitter melon was 35,000 - 70,000 VND/kg, green beans 20,000 - 30,000 VND/kg, lettuce 30,000 VND/kg,... then since after Tet until now, green beans and bitter melon are only 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg, cucumber 500 - 1,000 VND/kg.
Good harvest, low price, deadlocked output,... is the vicious cycle that Vietnamese farmers have been facing for many years, unable to escape.
Explaining the sudden drop in vegetable prices, Mr. Tran Xuan Dinh - Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that normally after Tet, farmers will harvest a lot of winter vegetables and crops to make room for spring rice. Therefore, the supply of vegetables will increase suddenly.
Besides, this year's weather is humid, with timely spring rains, very favorable for the growth of vegetables. The warm temperature allows water spinach, Malabar spinach, celery, etc. to grow and develop quickly.
On the other hand, farmers focus on growing vegetables to serve Tet, but the amount of vegetables consumed during Tet is not much, or the vegetables are harvested at the wrong time, causing the amount of vegetables on the market to increase after Tet, causing supply to exceed demand.
Faced with this situation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has sent an urgent dispatch to the Department of Crop Production, the Department of Plant Protection and the Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development.
The leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture urgently requested to continue checking the information reported by the press, propose solutions to overcome the situation, especially the direction of production associated with processing and market development of vegetables and tubers...

Green vegetables after Tet must be pulled out to feed pigs
(Baonghean.vn) - For about 15 days now, the price of various green vegetables has suddenly dropped sharply, causing vegetable growers in many localities to fall into dire straits and lose billions of dong.
Previously, talked withPVRegarding the sad chorus of Vietnamese agricultural products, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the situation of our agricultural products losing value is truly undesirable, arising from our transition to a market-based production mechanism.
Vietnam has more than 16 million rural production households, mainly family-run, so planning is difficult. Farmers cannot immediately grasp market signals, so the State must forecast and plan for people's production.
However, there are many cases where the State has given recommendations, but whenever the price of a product is good, people focus on producing that product, leading to supply exceeding demand.
"Farmers are still mostly used to traditional production. When they see a product with high profits, they focus on that product. Even in many places, they are warned but do not listen and still try to produce," said Deputy Minister Tuan.
