(Baonghean.vn) - In Hamlet 323, Dinh Son Commune, Anh Son District, everyone knows Mr. Nguyen Duy Trinh, who raises "specialty animals," because he boldly pioneered the raising of spotted deer, wild boar, porcupines, etc. This model brings him a profit of 120-150 million VND per year.

Mr. Trinh's deer herd has yielded a bountiful harvest.

Leading us on a tour of his farm, Mr. Nguyen Duy Trinh confided: "In 1988, after being discharged from the army and returning to my hometown, I started developing the local economy. Initially, my family focused on raising cattle, but due to lack of experience and disease outbreaks, our herd of 17 cows was almost completely wiped out... Despite this major failure in livestock farming, I didn't give up. I continued raising animals, but switched to raising 'specialties' like porcupines, spotted deer, and free-range chickens."

In 2010, the porcupine farming movement boomed in Anh Son. Mr. Trinh bought two pairs of breeding porcupines to raise, and currently, his herd still has 10 porcupines. Wanting to try new models, in 2014, Mr. Trinh went to Ha Tinh to buy breeding deer to experiment with. From the initial 4 breeding deer, his family's herd has now increased to 10 deer, including 5 male deer that produce antlers, yielding 5 kg of antlers per year, bringing in an income of over 60 million VND per year.

Mr. Trinh also raises hedgehogs.

Besides raising specialty livestock, Mr. Trinh also dug a 0.5-hectare pond to raise fish and keeps 200-300 free-range chickens each year to improve his family's meals and increase his income.

Sharing his experience in raising specialty animals, Mr. Trinh said: "Raising wild boars, spotted deer, and porcupines isn't difficult because they are wild animals with high resistance and rarely get sick. You just need to focus on vaccinations from a young age. Besides, their main food source is leaves and roots. Therefore, you can utilize empty plots of land to grow corn and elephant grass to ensure a clean food source for livestock. The important thing is the market for the products; currently, I'm selling to restaurants."

The orange tree has produced its first fruits.

Not stopping there, on his 4-hectare orchard, Mr. Nguyen Duy Trinh also planted 1,000 orange trees, 500 pomelo trees, and black olive trees. Currently, many of the orange trees have entered the development stage and are beginning to bear fruit. It is expected that these 4 hectares of various fruit trees will provide him with a significant income in the near future.

The farm owned by veteran Nguyen Duy Trinh, which raises specialty livestock, has become a regular learning and experience-sharing point for the Veterans Association of Dinh Son commune.
