Nam Dan farmers cry because of the dramatic drop in melon prices.
(Baonghean.vn) - It's currently cucumber harvest season, but the price of this agricultural product is falling rapidly, and traders are not even buying it, forcing many people to destroy it and feed it to cattle...
This spring crop, Nam Dan has nearly 30 hectares of cucumbers, of which Nam Anh has the most with 20 hectares, Nam Xuan grows less, with 5-6 hectares. If at the beginning of the season, the price of cucumbers was 3,000-4,000 VND/kg, now it is only 1,000 VND/kg, even 500-700 VND/kg is difficult to sell.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nham in hamlet 6 Nam Anh this year grew 1 sao of melon, with a yield of 2 tons/sao. |
In Nam Anh, there are 9 hamlets, all of which grow melons. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nham in hamlet 6 of Nam Anh this year grew 1 sao of melons. After 3 months of care, her family started harvesting melons. However, the first 3-4 crops were only sold for 4,000-5,000 VND/kg, and later, it was less than 1,000 VND/kg. The price of melons was too cheap, not worth the effort of harvesting, so she pulled them out to prepare the land for planting jasmine.

But the price of melons was too cheap, so the couple harvested them to feed their cattle. |
On the field in hamlet 6, we met Mr. Nguyen Van Nam, a vegetable trader who said that the price of melons is very cheap these days. The other day, he bought nearly 40 kg of melons for only 20,000 VND to chop them up to feed the geese.
With the price of water fern only 500-1,000 VND/kg, each sao only earns about 2 million VND, the cost is also 1.2-1.5 million VND/sao, considered as planting for free.

The price of melons is only 500-1,000 VND/kg, but traders only buy a small amount because it is still difficult to sell. |
Similarly, Nam Anh cucumbers are also in a situation of falling prices miserably. People have tried every way to consume all the unsold cucumbers they have harvested.
At Chua - Nam Dan market, traders collect vegetables and fruits to import to markets in Vinh city. Normally, they buy about 10 tons of melons per day, but now they only buy a few tons. Ms. Huong - a trader said that she buys at 700 VND/kg, imports at only 1,000 VND/kg, but the consumption is very slow.

The price is too cheap, many households are not interested in harvesting. The sight of cucumbers being destroyed and left to rot right at the foot of the field is not uncommon in the fields of Nam Dan. |
Ms. Bui Thi Oanh - Head of the district's agricultural department said: Spring melon productivity this year is high, averaging 2 tons/sao, even in some places reaching 3 tons/sao, while last year it was only 1.5-2 tons/sao. Melons have a good harvest and high productivity but cannot compete with Do Luong and Nghia Dan melons.
“Nghia Dan and Do Luong grow delicious local spiny melon varieties that are popular in the market, while Nam Dan mainly grows hybrid melon varieties with high yield but lower quality. This year, Nam Dan also planted spiny melons, but in the cold weather at the beginning of the year, they all died, forcing people to replant hybrid melons,” said Ms. Oanh.
Although determining the price of goods follows market rules and localities cannot intervene, to avoid losses due to the story of good harvest and low prices, before planting, people need to closely grasp the market, tastes, and consumption levels to determine the appropriate varieties and planting areas.
