Nghe An farmers use ginger, garlic, and chili to prevent pests and diseases in vegetables
(Baonghean.vn) - To gradually build a brand for agricultural products, Nghi Loc farmers focus on safe production, as a premise for producing clean vegetables according to the VietGAP method.
This winter, Mrs. Tran Thi Mui's family in Hamlet 13, Nghi Long Commune (Nghi Loc) produced 3 sao of vegetables. Previously, whenever her crops had pests, she used common pesticides to prevent them. Recently, sAfter being trained and absorbing scientific and technical advances, Ms. Mui used homemade preparations of plant origin such as garlic, ginger, chili, and alcohol to spray to prevent pests.
“The biological product is simple to make but highly effective. Use 1 kg of chili, 1 kg of ginger, 1 kg of crushed garlic, soak in 3 liters of alcohol, leave for 3 months and use, it will replace the previous pesticides” - Ms. Mui said.
This product is sprayed weekly on vegetable plants. It does not directly kill insects but repels butterflies that lay eggs, preventing the emergence of pests that damage plants. This product is also effective against aphids, aphids, and fungi of all kinds.
Up to now, Nghi Long commune has expanded 50 hectares of high-income fields with a revenue of 400 million VND/ha/year. Along with expanding the area and promoting intensive farming to increase productivity, Nghi Long focuses on safe production.
The commune has built a safe vegetable model with the focus on innovation in the use of fertilizers and pesticides. The model is built on an area of 10 hectares, concentrated in hamlets 3, 12, 13 and 14. This is a place where sandy loam soil is suitable for vegetable production; there is enough water for irrigation along with facilities to ensure production such as electricity, roads, irrigation for crop drainage.

Participating in the model are households with sufficient labor resources.Every year, the commune organizes 2 to 3 training courses, inviting agricultural experts to transfer production science and technology, thanks to which, people participating in the model have used fertilizers properly and pesticides safely in the production process.
Previously, many families used chemicals to kill weeds. Now it is recommended not to use them in the area and is prohibited in safe vegetable production areas. People also spread the word to each other and voluntarily comply; weeding is done completely mechanically.
Thanks to the application of scientific and technological advances, many vegetable growing areas are both safe and have high productivity and good prices.
“We produce clean, reputable vegetables, so the vegetables we produce are purchased in large quantities by small traders. For example, my family has only harvested 50% of the area but has already earned 20 million VND,” said Mr. Tran Van Quang in Hamlet 13, Nghi Long Commune.

According to Mr. Dong Thanh Binh - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghi Loc district, based on Nghi Long's safe vegetable production model, in 2018 the district will coordinate with Tam Nguyen Company to build a VietGAP clean vegetable model on an area of 3,000 - 4,000 m2 in this locality. The district directed Nghi Long commune to select areas with suitable crops and issue initial production support mechanisms. After that, the locality will replicate the model on a large scale.
