Nghe An farmers make heat-resistant roofs for shrimp
(Baonghean.vn) - In the intense heat of 39-40 degrees Celsius, shrimp farmers in Quynh Luu district (Nghe An) actively use all measures to combat the heat, helping shrimp grow well.

Mr. Ho Xuan Dieu is using VICATO effervescent tablets to increase shrimp resistance. |
In the shrimp farming area of Quynh Thanh commune, on hot days, shrimp farmers actively go to the pond to check the health of the shrimp to have timely measures to prevent heat.
Mr. Ho Xuan Dieu in hamlet 12, Quynh Thanh commune has nearly 1 hectare of shrimp farming area and said: Shrimp farming in the hot season requires heat protection and adequate water supply into the pond for shrimp growth. It is necessary to maintain the water level in the pond ≥ 1.4m.
Increasing the water fan on hot sunny days or during heavy rain helps to mix the water, avoiding stratification in the pond. In addition, Mr. Dieu also disinfects the pond with VICATO effervescent tablets to increase the shrimp's resistance.

Most shrimp farmers in Quynh Luu increase aeration in their ponds to ensure adequate oxygen supply at all water levels. |
Thanks to the application of technology in the farming process, the shrimp raised in the family pond are now growing well. After 40 days, the shrimp reached a weight of 90 shrimp/kg; it is expected that in nearly a month, his family will harvest.
Hot weather and possibly unseasonal rains will cause sudden changes in environmental factors in the pond, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks for aquatic animals in the farming areas of the district. Bacterial diseases in farmed shrimp are developing strongly, especially Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND).
Faced with that situation, some shrimp farmers have invested money to build a cover system to prevent heat and limit risks for shrimp.

Shrimp farming system with a covered net of Mr. Vu Van Duc's family in Quynh Luong commune. He said that thanks to the covered roof, shrimp grow healthily and produce high yields. |
Mr. Vu Van Duc, a shrimp farmer in Quynh Luong commune, said: His family has 7 hectares of shrimp ponds, of which 2 hectares are shrimp farming. To protect the shrimp from the heat, in 2013, his family invested 400-500 million VND to build a net cover system in the 3,000m2 pond. Therefore, the temperature in the covered pond is always at 30-31 degrees Celsius, which is suitable for shrimp to grow.

Using a shade net will reduce the direct impact from high outdoor temperatures, regulating the appropriate water temperature from 30-31 degrees Celsius. |
“Shrimp farmers need to use quality feed and drugs, chemicals, and biological products on the list of permitted products in aquaculture to treat the environment, prevent and treat diseases, and ensure the health of farmed shrimp,” Mr. Duc added.
Quynh Luu district has 9/33 communes with shrimp farming, with an area of 460 hectares of ponds. The communes with the most are: Quynh Bang with nearly 200 hectares, Quynh Thanh with nearly 80 hectares, Quynh Luong with 60 hectares... In order to limit the risk of damage to shrimp farming during the hot season, right from the beginning of the season, Quynh Luu district has directed localities with shrimp farming areas to advise people on prevention, control and protection of shrimp during the hot season.

Quynh Luu District Agricultural Extension Station has piloted releasing 3,400 white-leg shrimp larvae in a covered pond in Hoi Noi area, Quynh Doi commune. |
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dinh - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district recommends: The main shrimp farming season in the locality is from April to August every year, the suitable temperature for shrimp development is from 25 - 30 degrees Celsius. However, in the summer months, the outdoor temperature in the locality is always high from 38 - 40 degrees Celsius, which will cause some diseases in shrimp.
Shrimp farmers need to supply enough water to the pond to cool the shrimp, increase the shrimp's resistance by adding minerals, intestinal microorganisms, beta glucan, vitamins, etc., need to invest in a cover system to reduce the direct impact from high outdoor temperatures, regulate water temperature appropriately, limit temperature stratification in the pond, limit the growth and development of algae; at the same time, increase aeration in the pond so that oxygen is provided sufficiently at all water levels.
