(Baonghean.vn) - Heavy rain and whirlwinds on May 1st caused thousands of hectares of spring rice fields nearing harvest time in the districts of Hung Nguyen, Do Luong, Anh Son, Thanh Chuong, etc. to collapse. Farmers had to gather in the fields to rebuild the green rice fields and urgently harvest the rice fields that were over 70% ripe.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh in hamlet 2A, Hung Yen Bac commune (Hung Nguyen) is over 60 years old but still wades through the fields with green rice bushes lying flat in the water, tying 5-6 bushes together to make the plants stand up.

“My family grew 6 sao of rice, and when we were almost ready to harvest, the storms and whirlwinds broke it all. The fields are low, and the water is 30-40 cm deep, so if we let them soak in water, they will be ruined. The green rice will rot if we let them soak in water, and if we tie them up in clumps, we don’t know when we will be able to finish,” Mr. Thanh said, wiping the sweat from his forehead.

Not far from Mr. Thanh's rice field, Mrs. Pham Thi Ha - a farmer in hamlet 3B, Hung Yen Bac commune, was also busy picking up each fallen rice bush and tying them together to prevent them from sprouting. In addition, 7 sao of Thien Uu rice, which was about to be harvested, of Mrs. Hoang Thi Minh - a farmer in hamlet 3B, Hung Yen Bac, was also broken...

According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hung Nguyen district, storms have destroyed about 600 hectares of rice ready for harvest, mainly concentrated in the communes of Hung Tay, Hung Yen Bac, Hung Yen Nam and Hung Trung.

To limit the damage, the District People's Committee has directed communes to count the collapsed area and instruct farmers to rebuild green rice fields. For areas that are 70% ripe, harvest them promptly to limit rice germination in the fields, affecting productivity.

In Do Luong, the storm also caused 350 hectares of ripe rice to fall. The most affected areas were Tru Son and Van Son communes...

Immediately after the rain stopped, farmers went to the fields to check and tie the rice into clusters to avoid flooding and sprouting, and at the same time drained the water in the fields.

It is worth mentioning that many rice fields are ripe or over 90% ripe, but many farmers are still hesitant to harvest. The slow harvest of spring rice may encounter heavy rain and storms, affecting productivity and delaying the summer-autumn production season.
