This year, Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan lives inKim Nghia hamlet, Nghi Long commune, Nghi Loc district planted more than 2,000 lily plants of various types: coffee lily, fragrant lily, pointed yellow lily, ù lily... By the 24th of Tet, traders had come to the garden to deposit all the lilies above.
Mr. Tuan said: “Due to concerns about the epidemic and reduced purchasing power, we only dared to plant that many lilies, reducing the area by 50% compared to last year. However, before Tet, many people came to buy flowers, the lilies were all sold out, the number of people asking to buy in large quantities but the garden had no more flowers to supply the market.”

Not only Mr. Tuan's household but also other lily growers in Kim Nghia this year have reduced their acreage due to concerns about difficult output.

Mr. Tran Quoc Hung, head of Kim Nghia hamlet, said: “This year, lilies have had favorable weather conditions so they have grown well, the flowers are big, even, beautiful and bloom right on Tet, so they are quite popular. The price of flowers is also higher than last year, currently the selling price at the garden is from 30,000 - 50,000 VND/branch (depending on the type). Due to concerns about reduced consumption while the price of seeds and fertilizers has increased, people do not dare to invest much in lilies but only plant a small amount, replacing the rest with chrysanthemums and vegetables. Now, many gardeners ask to buy flowers but there are no more to sell.”

Growing 1,000 pots of lilies of all kinds to serve the Tet market, Mr. Pham Trung Kien (Kim Lien commune, Nam Dan district) is always worried about the output when the epidemic is complicated. Meanwhile, the initial investment cost is up to nearly 100 million VND, not to mention the day and night care.
“I planted it like that but I wasn’t sure if I could sell it. I was very worried. Luckily, close to Tet, most of the flowers had been seen, deposited, and bought by customers,” Mr. Kien shared.

According to traders, flower prices this year have increased slightly compared to last year. Accordingly, chrysanthemums of all kinds have increased by 500 - 700 VND/branch; lilies have increased by 3,000 - 5,000 VND/branch; dahlias and gladiolus have increased by 1,500 - 2,000 VND/branch, and sunflowers have increased by 1,000 - 1,500 VND/branch.
Mr. Hoang Nghia An, a lily buyer in Nghi Long commune, said: “Nghi Long lilies are popular with customers because they are cut in the garden, ensuring freshness, not transported long distances, not refrigerated, and have high durability. Therefore, every year I go to buy wholesale from the gardens and bring them to Vinh City to import to flower shops. This year, the flowers are beautiful, the price is higher than previous years.”

Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and concerns about a sharp decrease in purchasing power, this year, flower growers have been cautious about planting, the flower acreage has decreased sharply, the number of flowers grown is only about 40 - 45% compared to previous years. After 5 months of meticulous care, flower growers are worried about the output. However, up to now, most types of flowers have been consumed at high prices, helping people have more income at the end of the year, buying a warm Tet for their families./.
