Farmers on the outskirts of Vinh city grow mulberry to earn tens of millions of dong
(Baonghean.vn) - Mulberry trees have long been known as a source of raw materials for silkworms, but recently consumers have had a greater demand for mulberry fruit. Because it is believed to have the effect of cooling, detoxifying, beautifying and curing diseases. Quickly grasping that need, farmers in Xuan My hamlet, Nghi Duc commune (Vinh city) have expanded their mulberry gardens and harvested the fruit.
People in Xuan My hamlet said that growing strawberries is easy, does not require much care, and the sandy soil here is suitable for the growth and development of mulberry trees. The trees bear fruit all year round, but the most harvest is from March to September. Compared to other types of trees, growing strawberries for fruit is not difficult, does not require much effort, and still brings high income.

Mr. Pham Van Dong, the owner of a strawberry garden in Xuan My hamlet, shared: “I have been growing this strawberry garden for 4 years. There are 15 trees in my garden, each harvest lasts from 20-25 days, on average my family picks 60-70 kg of fruit per day...”
Mr. Dong also added that after harvesting, traders come to his house to buy the strawberries. Currently, strawberries cost from 30,000 - 50,000 VND/kg, some days his family earns more than 3 million VND, from the beginning of the harvest season until now, it has reached about 30 million VND.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, another resident in Xuan My hamlet, said: “In this area, each household has 5-7 mulberry trees, and some households have 10-15 trees. Mulberry is easy to grow, and people do not have to worry about finding a source of consumption. They only focus on picking the fruit to ensure a supply. Each mulberry garden helps bring in an income of 20-40 million VND/crop for families.”
Currently, many households in Nghi Duc commune have also converted land for growing short-term agricultural crops such as corn, potatoes, peanuts... to growing mulberry for fruit.

Ms. Tuyet said that the Women's Union of Nghi Duc commune also has many policies to support households in the hamlet to expand their strawberry gardens and develop models such as: training on technology transfer, supporting loan capital...
