About 70 lawmakers from the conservative Liberty Korea Party protested outside the Blue House today, urging President Moon Jae-in to cancel Mr. Kim's visit.

"Kim Yong-chol is a vicious war criminal who attacked South Korea. He deserves to be hanged in the street,"AFPKim Sung-tae, the leader of the party's parliamentary group, said that it was impossible to allow a North Korean general to be invited to the closing ceremony of the Olympics.

Baek Tae-hyun, a spokesman for South Korea's Unification Ministry, said the government was aware of concerns about Mr Kim's visit to South Korea, but saw it as "an opportunity to improve inter-Korean relations and a possible peace settlement".

Mr. Kim will lead an eight-member delegation to South Korea on February 25 to attend the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics. The event will also be attended by Ivanka Trump, daughter and senior advisor to US President Donald Trump.

Mr Kim is accused of being behind a series of attacks on South Korea, including the sinking of the warship Cheonan that killed 46 people and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island in 2010. North Korea has always denied sinking the South Korean warship.
