Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that in the early morning of March 6, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea launched four missiles, three of which fell into Japan's exclusive economic zone.

The British BBC news agency quoted a South Korean military source as saying that the missile launch was believed to have occurred at 7:36 a.m. (local time) from the Tongchang-ri area, near North Korea's northern border with China.

South Korea is actively identifying the type of this missile.

However, analysts said this could be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) because Tongchang-ri is an area often used for North Korea's long-range missile tests.

Last month, North Korea also announced the successful test of a new type of ballistic missile and conducted the launch under the supervision of leader Kim Jong-un.

North Korea is banned from testing all types of missiles and nuclear technology, so the February test was also strongly condemned by the United Nations, the United States, South Korea and Japan.

North Korea has repeatedly asserted that its space program is peaceful, but Pyongyang is believed to be developing intercontinental ballistic missiles with the range to reach US territory.

The country is also believed to be seeking to build a nuclear warhead small enough to fit on a missile.

The March 6 missile test took place in the context of the US and South Korea conducting annual joint military exercises called “Foal Eagle”. North Korea has always claimed that the US and South Korea exercises are war rehearsals for Pyongyang.
