The designer of the outfit Ngoc Trinh wore at the final round of Miss Ao Dai Vietnam 2017 confirmed that he did not learn from fashion house Giambattista Valli.

On the evening of August 3, Ngoc Trinh appeared prominently on the red carpet of the final night of Miss Ao Dai Vietnam 2017 wearing a light, fluffy, romantic floral dress designed by Do Long. The sweet work with light purple turned the 8X model into a gorgeous princess.

However, on social networks, some opinions have appeared that this product is a "plagiarized idea" from the Giambattista Valli Fall 2017 Couture design that was launched early last month, performed by model Sara Witt.

The noticeable difference is that the designer outfit has 3D flowers on the chest and the skirt is made of see-through material to reveal underwear. Ngoc Trinh's dress is more discreet and has flowers on the hem.

Responding to Ngoisao.net, designer Do Long said he came up with the idea for this outfit himself and did not follow Ngoc Trinh's request like many times before. In addition, he had quite a long and detailed response to the plagiarism accusation.

According to Do Long, learning and referencing is definitely there, because "people often say 'Learn from the masters' because didn't all the designers who came after learn from Madame Gres's top pleating technique? Fashion houses Lanvin and Valentino also often use this technique in their designs".

He added that when pleating the bust, there will be 3 basic axes: the chest, the bust and the waist, so having 3 lines like that is obvious. To talk about the design of the outfit, we have to look at the whole thing, not just focus on small details to confirm whether it is a copy or not, unless it is a characteristic detail of the designer.

In the dress for Ngoc Trinh, the main highlight is still the chest because Do Long wanted to exploit her inherent sexiness. The chest is cut in a deep V, and emphasized by two crossed straps, drawing the eye to the cleavage. "And because Ngoc Trinh's waist is quite short, wearing a dress that is too puffy and flared will make her look short. Therefore, I used nude mesh at the waist to push the skirt down a bit, changing the body proportions to help Ngoc Trinh look more graceful in this dress."

In addition to the technical aspects, the male designer also shared about materials and colors. He combined chiffon and soft mesh, mixing two colors light purple and pastel pink. The skirt is made of many layers, each layer is a different color and cut to create the shape he wanted. Every detail on the work was carefully calculated by Do Long, so he "really gets upset when someone says I stole the design".

In particular, the 8X fashion designer also publicly revealed the images he referenced to create this dress. "I do not deny learning from foreign designers, but learning must be selective and personally creative, I do not copy 100% to become a faulty version of famous designers."
