According to an official source from the Royal Palace, the decision to strip Infanta Cristina of her title of Duchess of Palma de Mallorca will be announced in a royal decree on June 13.
Infanta Cristina, 49, was given the title of Duchess by King Juan Carlo in 1997. She is married to Urdangarin, 47, a former Olympic handball champion. However, she has been implicated in a tax corruption scandal involving her husband.
According to the allegations, Mr Urdangarin used his royal status to win contracts in the Balearic Islands and Valencia through his non-profit company Noos. The amount involved in the scandal is up to 6.1 million euros.
After four years of investigation, on December 22, 2014, the court decided for the first time to summon Infanta Cristina to appear in court. This was also the first time a member of the royal family had been summoned to court in the history of the Spanish monarchy. It can be said that the incident has become a scandal that has greatly affected the reputation of the Spanish royal family, especially when King Felipe VI had pledged to run the country honestly and transparently during his coronation in June 2014.
