According to official sources from the Royal Palace, the decision to strip Infanta Cristina of her title as Duchess of Palma de Mallorca will be announced in a royal decree on June 13th.
Infanta Cristina, 49, was granted the title of Duchess by King Juan Carlo in 1997. She is married to Urdangarin, 47, a former Olympic handball champion. However, she is accused of involvement in a tax corruption scandal linked to her husband.
According to the allegations, Urdangarin used his royal status to secure contracts in the Balearic Islands and Valencia through his non-profit company, Noos. The amount involved in the scandal is estimated at 6.1 million euros.
After a four-year investigation, on December 22, 2014, the court decided to summon Infanta Cristina to appear in court for the first time. This was also the first time a member of the royal family had been summoned to court in the history of the Spanish monarchy. The incident can be considered a major scandal that significantly damaged the reputation of the Spanish royal family, especially since King Felipe VI had pledged to govern the country honestly and transparently during his coronation in June 2014.
