Russian female tourist in Da Lat tests negative for MERS.
Test results from the 24-year-old Russian woman's sample at the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City came back negative for the MERS-CoV virus. Therefore, to date, Vietnam has not recorded any cases of the disease.
A representative from the Department of Preventive Medicine, Ministry of Health, stated that with these results, the isolation and surveillance measures for MERS-CoV prevention for this female tourist and those in close contact will be lifted. The tourist will receive advice and treatment for a common illness as per regulations.
Previously, the Russian female tourist arrived in Vietnam after transiting through Abu Dhabi International Airport in the United Arab Emirates and Bangkok Airport in Thailand. She exhibited symptoms of fever, headache, muscle aches, cough, and shortness of breath, and was admitted to Lam Dong Provincial General Hospital on June 23rd for isolation and monitoring.
To date, Vietnam has not recorded any cases of MERS-CoV. All suspected cases subsequently tested negative.
On June 24, South Korea reported four new cases of MERS, bringing the total number of patients with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome to 179, with 27 deaths. 69 patients have recovered and been discharged from the hospital.
Representatives from Samsung Hospital in South Korea have officially apologized to the public on television for their negligence in allowing the disease to spread within the hospital. According to statistics, nearly half of the total MERS cases in the country were infected due to transmission within the Samsung Hospital environment.
According to the World Health Organization, as of June 24th, the world had recorded 1,352 cases of MERS with 479 deaths in 27 countries. Local cases were reported in 9 countries, and imported cases in 18 countries; including several Asian countries such as the Philippines, Malaysia, South Korea, China, and Thailand.
