On October 13, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened the first instance trial of defendant Vo Thi Hanh (born 1987), residing in Nam Dan town, Nam Dan district, for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property".
According to the indictment, Hanh is a school health worker. From July 2022 to January 2023, in order to have money to spend, Hanh used deceitful tricks, providing false information that could help Lo Thi Minh Nhan - Vice President of the Red Cross Society of Ky Son district and Lo Thi Soa - Vice President of the Red Cross Society of Ta Ca commune, Ky Son district to avoid criminal prosecution related to receiving and coordinating relief money for Ky Son people after the flash flood disaster.
Besides, Hanh also said that after getting a "clear sentence", she can request to transfer these two people to new positions.

Trusting her, Mrs. Nhan gave Hanh 240 million VND and 2 wild boars. Mrs. Soa gave Hanh 210 million VND, 3 kg of beef, and 3 nests of sticky rice.
However, after receiving the money, Hanh spent it all. Ms. Nhan and Soa were later prosecuted and tried for the crime of Abusing position and power while performing official duties.
In addition, Hanh also provided false and forged information that she could "help" Ms. Hoang Thi H. (Vinh City) get a job at Song Lam Water Supply Company Limited, embezzling 30 million VND.
The investigation agency determined that the total amount of money that Vo Thi Hanh had appropriated from the victims was nearly 490 million VND.
At the trial, the defendant admitted to the crime as charged in the indictment. Hanh stated that because of debt and need for money, he committed the act of defrauding the victims. After the case was exposed, the defendant influenced the family to compensate all the money to the victims.
The defendant presented his difficult circumstances and his child's serious illness to ask the court to consider reducing his sentence.
The jury found that the defendant’s provision of false information to defraud and appropriate money from the victims was a violation of the law. Therefore, the court sentenced Vo Thi Hanh to 3 years and 6 months in prison.
