Human trafficking 'monster' arrested after 23 years on the run

Discovered by the police while tricking two Vietnamese women into being sold to China, Nguyen Thi Vinh fled to the southern provinces.

On August 10, Quang Ninh Provincial Police announced that they had just arrested Nguyen Thi Vinh (62 years old, residing in Mong Cai City, Quang Ninh) for human trafficking, after 23 years on the run.

According to the investigation agency, in 1990, Vinh and her husband moved from Hai Phong to Hai Ninh district (now Mong Cai city), Quang Ninh province to settle down. Her husband worked as a motorbike repairman, and Vinh opened a restaurant.

In 1993, Vinh colluded with some Chinese people to trick and sell two Vietnamese women across the border and was discovered by the police.On March 14, 1994, Quang Ninh Provincial Police issued a wanted notice for Nguyen Thi Vinh.

Knowing that the police were looking for them, Vinh and his wife fled to the southern provinces and the Central Highlands, then registered permanent residence in District 9, Ho Chi Minh City. Under the guise of a hard-working woman doing business and housework, the suspect was able to fool the authorities there.

After that, Vinh continued to move to Binh Duong province to live and registered temporary residence in Tan Binh ward, Di An town. On the evening of August 8, Quang Ninh Provincial Police coordinated with Binh Duong Provincial Police to inspect and arrest Nguyen Thi Vinh at the above address, ending more than 23 years of hiding.
