Caitlin Nelson choked last week during a pie-eating contest at Sacred Heart University. She was given first aid by two students before police and paramedics arrived, according to AP.
After a brief illness, Nelson’s condition stabilized. She was transferred to Columbia University Medical Center on March 31, but died on April 2.
Fairfield Police Lieutenant Bob Kalamaras said it was an unfortunate accident that occurred while people were participating in recreational activities.
Students and faculty at Sacred Heart University held a vigil for Nelson. John J. Petillo, the university's president, wrote on his personal page that the student's death was a "great loss to the community." Nelson was majoring in social work.
Caitlin Nelson is the daughter of James Nelson, a police officer who died in the 9/11 attacks in Manhattan in 2001. He died while rescuing people trapped in the World Trade Center. Caitlin was 5 years old at the time.
