Mong female student receives full financial support to study at Hanoi Medical University
Tho Y Cu is the first female Hmong student from Nghe An to be admitted to Hanoi Medical University. To help her realize her dream of becoming a university student, in recent days many kind-hearted people have come to share and support...
Studious Mong female student
Among the more than 200 12th grade students of the Ethnic Boarding High School No. 2 participating in the Graduation Exam this year, Tho Y Cu is a special student. Although she is not a student of the selective class and has a modest entrance score, she is a determined student.
After hearing the news that Ý Cu was admitted to Hanoi Medical University, teacher Nguyen Cao Quan - Ý Cu's Biology teacher at Ethnic Boarding High School No. 2 shared on his personal page and called this a "miracle".

In his story, teacher Nguyen Cao Quan also shared that 3 years ago, after watching a short report about a Mong student in Nghe An who passed the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Technology - Hanoi Medical University, he set a goal to teach a Mong student to conquer the General Medicine at this prestigious school. Therefore, since grade 10, having taught Y Cu and knowing that her older sister, Tho Y Sinh, had to put aside her dream of conquering the university to go to work because of difficult family circumstances, his determination became even stronger.
However, during nearly 3 years of studying at the school, the teacher asked Ý Cu many times in class whether he wanted to be the first Hmong student from his village to be admitted to Hanoi University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and Ý Cu always replied that he was afraid he would not be able to conquer it. Later, the teacher also admitted that when Ý Cu refused, it was because "the teacher was not sensitive enough to understand that the reason why Ý Cu did not study was because he thought he would have to pay tuition, adding more difficulties and burdens to his family."

It was not until April 2024, after no longer having the opportunity to enter military schools, that Ý Cu decided to transfer to Block B. When he learned of his student's intention and was offered help by the homeroom teacher, Mr. Quân was very happy and encouraged Ý Cu to study. He himself was willing to "teach to support and not collect tuition fees."
Sprinting for 3 months and despite starting later than their classmates, but with the spirit of endurance, perseverance and strong determination, teacher Nguyen Cao Quan and student Tho Y Cu finally reached the finish line successfully.
You probably don't know how happy I am. Happy because I achieved my goal, but the greatest joy is that I contributed to giving you strength - the Hmong student who was still shy and timid with a shy smile, now got into a hot major at a top university in the country. For me, this can be summed up in two words: "MIRACLE".
Teacher Nguyen Cao Quan wrote on the day he received the news that Y Cu was admitted to Hanoi Medical University.
The biggest concern of the teachers and the school board is that Ý Cu's family cannot afford to send their child to school. Teacher Trương Thị Thanh Thủy - Vice Principal of the school, when introducing this studious example, also confided: I am very worried about Ý Cu's situation and also very sorry about her sister's situation in the past. Therefore, I really hope to have someone to share so that she can fulfill her dream.
Family's Desire
Two days before Tho Y Cu officially enrolled in Hanoi Medical University (Thanh Hoa branch), his small house in Na Nieng village was filled with laughter. At nearly 50 years old, after many sleepless nights, Mr. Tho Va Da - his father said he could rest assured because he no longer had to worry too much about not having enough money for his child's education.

This is not the first time he has worried about his child's university education, because just 2 years ago, Tho Y Sinh, Y Cu's older sister, also took the university entrance exam and scored nearly 29 points (including priority points) and was recognized by the Provincial Ethnic Committee as a student with high scores in the 2022 High School Graduation Exam. However, despite having many opportunities to go to university, Y Sinh decided to go to Taiwan to both study and work part-time, giving the opportunity to go to university to her youngest sister.
After being in Taiwan for more than a year, at the beginning of this year, Y Sinh decided to return home to retake the university entrance exam. However, her dream did not come true because of a small mistake in the registration process.
Telling more about this, Ý Cu's father said: This year, both of my children took the university entrance exam. Ý Cu applied to Hanoi Medical University, Ý Sinh applied to the Military Medical and Pedagogical Academy, because these are two majors with tuition support. He got high scores on the exam and was confident that he would be admitted. On the day the benchmark scores were announced, he realized that his application had not checked the priority group for ethnic minority students. Therefore, even though he scored nearly 25 points, he did not have enough points to be admitted.

They said they went to Taiwan to study and work, but after more than a year of working, Y Sinh only saved more than 100 million VND, half of which she sent back to pay off the debt for the cost of going abroad. After deducting the cost of food, accommodation, airfare and tuition, Y Sinh only had about 30 million VND left. Knowing that she no longer had the chance to go to university, she was willing to share this money with her younger sister, but it was only enough to pay for one semester of tuition. Y Sinh and Y Cu's older brother, who had just graduated from the 1st Army Officer School and now started working in Nghia Dan district, also took a portion of his salary to support her.
However, for a near-poor family, with parents working as farmers, the estimated tuition fee of nearly 10 million VND/month is still too great a burden for the family.
My family always determined that no matter how difficult it is, we will try our best to let our children go to school and escape poverty. But when I received my child's admission notice, I saw that the tuition fee of medical school is much higher than other schools and next year will be higher than the previous year. After calculating all the options, it is difficult to pursue all 6 years of study.
Answering the question of why he suggested his child "transfer to another school to study", Mr. Tho Va Da confided:
Supporting new students of Hanoi Medical University
“A female Mong student admitted to Hanoi Medical University is at risk of missing her appointment with the university” is an article published on Nghe An Electronic Newspaper on August 28. At that time, Y Cu only had 4 days left to confirm her admission to the school. Meanwhile, her family had not yet determined whether she would attend school or not.

Immediately after the article was published, a number of philanthropists and organizations directly contacted the writer and shared the story of Tho Y Cu through a number of social networking sites. At the same time, many meaningful gifts also came to Y Cu and her family with the desire to support her in realizing her dream. A philanthropist in Vinh city, after giving her 10 million VND in support, said: I really sympathize with Y Cu's situation and hope that my small gift will be timely support, helping her family have more expenses for studying.
On the afternoon of August 30, the Que Phong District Association for Promotion of Education coordinated with the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs and the People's Committee of Tri Le Commune to promptly visit and give gifts to Tho Y Cu with a total amount of nearly 10 million VND.

Tri Le is one of the 60 poor communes in the country. The whole commune has 2,200 households, of which 1,332 are poor households and 522 are near-poor households, with many difficult conditions. Y Cu's family is near-poor but has a tradition of studiousness, all the children are well-behaved and good at studying.
The fact that you passed the entrance exam to Hanoi Medical University is not only the pride of your family but also the joy of the villagers. I hope that your example of studiousness will help encourage students in the commune to strive to develop and build their hometown and village in the future.
Mr. Lu Van Cuong - Chairman of Tri Le Commune People's Committee
With the hope that Tho Y Cu can study for 6 years at Hanoi Medical University with peace of mind, on the afternoon of September 4, Dr. Tran Doan Lam - owner of a cosmetic facility in Hanoi, representative of the "Supporting Doctors to School" Scholarship Fund of the unit also went directly to the family to work with the commune authorities, grasp the actual situation and listen to the family's wishes.
Here, in addition to giving the first 2 months of study expenses to the student, Dr. Tran Doan Lam also committed to supporting 1 scholarship of 100% tuition fee/6 years of study at Hanoi Medical University, Thanh Hoa branch; 1 scholarship of 100% living expenses/6 years of study at Hanoi Medical University, Thanh Hoa branch with a support level of 4 million VND/1 month.
I grew up in Tuyen Quang province and was also a poor student. In 2008, I passed the university entrance exam and received the “Support to School” scholarship, which helped me fulfill my dream of going to university and becoming a doctor. Therefore, when establishing the “Support to School for Doctors” Fund, we hope to accompany poor students who overcome difficulties so that they have the opportunity to become doctors, do life-saving work and spread the example of studiousness to many other situations.
Doctor Tran Doan Lam

This school year, Tho Y Cu became the first female Mong student from Nghe An to be a student at Hanoi Medical University!
