Krasnodar School returned to training female pilots not so long ago and female students of this program always attract public attention.

The modern Russian army has about 45,000 female soldiers in service, as of 2018. Most female soldiers serve in signal troops, logistics units, medical troops, as well as military universities and colleges.

According to 2018 data from the Russian Ministry of Defense, about 315,000 women work in civilian positions in the Defense Ministry. In addition, about 1,300 women are studying at military schools across the country.

Krasnodar Air Force School has been training female soldiers since 2017, the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. In this photo, a female cadet prepares to take the oath.

Just two weeks after the announcement by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, the school received more than 150 applications from different parts of the country after the program reopened in 2017. Admission is based on the results of a general exam. After that, applicants will have to undergo a medical examination, as well as psychological tests and other requirements.

The school's future pilots will be ready to fly a military aircraft by 2020. If they can meet the military's expectations, they will join the country's pilot corps.

Some served in special women's air regiments, known as "Night Witches" because they terrified the Germans with their nighttime air raids.

According to the Krasnodar Air Force School's Facebook page, from 1961 to 1991, the Soviet Union also trained more than 1,700 Vietnamese students.
