Swiss President Wants to Reconcile Trump and Kim Jong-un

Switzerland is ready to act as a mediator to help resolve the North Korean crisis, including hosting ministerial-level talks.

Reuters quoted Ms. Leuthard as saying that Swiss soldiers had been deployed to the demarcation line between South Korea and North Korea. The leader added that her country, along with Sweden, had a history of diplomatic neutrality, and that Switzerland was also representing US interests in both Iran and Cuba.

However, the Swiss president urged China and the United States to shoulder their share of the responsibility, warning against “overreactions” after North Korea’s sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3.

Sanctions “don’t change much” in convincing Pyongyang to abandon its weapons programs, Leuthard said.

“I think it is really time for dialogue,” the politician said at a press conference in Berne. “We are ready to play a mediating role. I think in the coming weeks, a lot will depend on how the United States and China can play an influence in this crisis. That is why I think Switzerland and Sweden can play a role behind the scenes.”

Part of the task, President Leuthard said, would be to find a suitable location for officials – perhaps foreign ministers – to meet.

“I think that's our role, to look at what possibilities we can find, because Twitter is not the right tool… It's going to have to be very careful.”

“The situation in North Korea is very worrying. We are a small country. Perhaps they can meet in Sweden to find a political solution, not a solution with weapons,” President Leuthard asserted.
