Pregnant female death row inmate: Laughing and crying at the "breaking the rules" in solitary confinement

The discovery of a pregnant female prisoner in Quang Ninh Province Police Detention Center has shocked the public. Similar incidents have occurred in solitary confinement before.

On the afternoon of February 16, Quang Ninh Provincial Police officially announced the case of female death row inmate Nguyen Thi Hue (born in 1974, registered at 193, Day Thep area, Dong Dang town, Cao Loc, Lang Son) becoming pregnant. Hue was sentenced to death by the Supreme People's Court of Appeal under judgment No. 315 dated June 19, 2014.

According to information from Quang Ninh Provincial Police, on January 6, through detention management, the Provincial Police Detention Center discovered that death row inmate Nguyen Thi Hue was showing unusual signs. Through medical examination, it was determined that Nguyen Thi Hue was 4 to 5 months pregnant.

The Investigation Police Agency of Quang Ninh Province and the Provincial People's Procuracy have investigated and clarified the case.

Accordingly, after being sentenced to death, knowing that she could not escape punishment, Nguyen Thi Hue took advantage of the humaneness of the law that does not execute pregnant women and loopholes in prison management to find a way to make herself pregnant. Hue colluded with a male prisoner to inject sperm and inject needles into Hue. Afterwards, Hue injected sperm into her own body, causing the female death row inmate to become pregnant.

Regarding this incident, Quang Ninh Provincial Police initially suspended 4 prison officers from work for investigation and clarification.

5 times sex in prison

The case of death row inmate Nguyen Thi Hue is causing a stir in public opinion, however, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred in solitary confinement.

According to the law, those who were not pregnant when they committed the crime but became pregnant during the investigation and trial, if their crime warranted the death penalty, their sentence would be reduced to life imprisonment. Many female prisoners took advantage of this and tried every way to get pregnant.

In September 2006, at the Hoa Binh Provincial Police Detention Center, there was a similar unfortunate incident. A female prisoner "crossed the line" and had sex with a male prisoner in the prison five times and then miraculously escaped the death penalty. At that time, the incident really shocked public opinion and this cunning female prisoner was Nguyen Thi Oanh (born in 1967, registered residence in La Hien commune, Vo Nhai district, Thai Nguyen province).

Oanh is a drug lord who was arrested by the police for trafficking 20 heroin cakes in late 2004. In both the first instance and appeal trials, Oanh was sentenced to death.

Ironically, before her execution date, Oanh announced that she was pregnant. An investigation was organized and two prison officers were suspended pending investigation. At the subsequent trial, these two prison officers were each sentenced to 9 years in prison for “giving the green light” for the female prisoner and the male prisoner to “have sex”.

According to the investigation, Nguyen Truong Thien (born in 1966), residing in Dong Nai province, is a prisoner about to finish his prison term. After being allowed out to go to the bathroom by the prison guards, Thien was sexually harassed by Oanh. At the same time, with the "winks" of the prison guards, Thien entered the solitary confinement cell 5 times to have sex with Oanh. As a result, this female prisoner escaped death.

Not yet in court but already had time to… give birth

At the same time as Nguyen Thi Oanh’s case, a rare incident also occurred at the famous Chi Hoa prison (HCMC). A female prisoner named Tran Thi Huong was arrested for drug trafficking with a large quantity of 9kg of drugs, the result that Huong had to pay was the maximum sentence. Knowing that, the “monster woman” was able to fool the prison guards and successfully carried out her goal of escaping the death penalty.

On June 16, 2006, Tran Thi Huong unexpectedly went into labor and gave birth to a baby boy. The baby was Huong's "lucky charm" and in the end, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court had to reduce Huong's sentence from death to life imprisonment according to the extremely humane provisions of the law. A pregnant female death row inmate is perhaps one of the rare events that has occurred in the history of Vietnamese legal proceedings. Taking advantage of loopholes in detention and taking advantage of humane provisions of the law, many subjects have thought of "a thousand tricks" to escape the death penalty. And, pregnancy is a tactic that many female death row inmates have used and successfully escaped death.
