One of the winners of the $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot in the US is said to be a nurse with seven children who works at a nursing home in California.

NY Daily News reported that the nurse, about 60 years old, was so dedicated to her job that after receiving the "life-changing" news, she continued to complete her shift at the Park Avenue nursing home in Pomona.

"Maybe that didn't shake her, she stayed until the end of her shift," said the nursing home's administrator, David Levy, who declined to name the nurse. "There couldn't have been a better person to do that. I'm happy for her."

What's special is that the winning ticket was probably bought as a gift by her boss.

Shlomo Rechnitz, who owns 80 health care facilities, bought Powerball tickets for all 15,000 of his employees and residents of nursing homes.

The winning ticket was sold at a convenience store in Chino Hills, 10 miles from the hospital.

Mr. Levy said the nurse learned of her lottery win after being informed by one of her seven children.

"She took out her ticket and checked it with the other nurses and they said 'oh I think you won'," he said. "It was crazy but she still finished her shift. It was amazing and it shows what kind of person she is. She's been here for years, taking care of the people who live here."

A total of three winning Powerball tickets were sold in California, Tennessee and Florida. However, none of their owners have come forward yet. The prize has increased from $1.5 billion to $1.6 billion.

"I absolutely hope it's her. It would be an interesting story," said California Lottery spokesman Russ Lopez. "But Twitter is flooded with fake tickets and people claiming to have won are skeptical until we verify the winner."

Each would receive $327.8 million before taxes if they choose to take the bonus outright.
