At around midnight on September 23, Sang took off his shirt, climbed over the wall, and broke into Ms. L's house, then covered his face with a mask. After searching several places but not finding any property, Sang decided to take a knife and wait in front of Ms. L's bedroom. After 3 hours of waiting, when he heard noises in Ms. L's bedroom, thinking that the homeowner had gotten up to go to the bathroom, Sang ran into the bathroom.
After that, Ms. L.'s mother, Ms. Nguyen Thi T. (born in 1946), went into the bathroom and discovered Sang so she called for help. Sang immediately used a knife to slash Ms. T.'s cheek. Ms. T. fell to the floor and called for help, but Sang still used the knife to stab Ms. T.'s left jaw and held her neck.
Hearing her mother's cry for help, Ms. L. ran out and saw Sang inside the bathroom. Frightened, Ms. L. closed the bathroom door and called for help, but Sang kicked the door open. Sang took a knife and slashed Ms. L.'s head, arms, and body repeatedly.
Not stopping there, the robber also threw Ms. L. down on the floor, sat on top of her and strangled her. When he saw that Ms. L. could not move, thinking that the homeowner was dead, Sang went inside and took a phone and 2 gold necklaces with a total value of nearly 27 million VND.
The forensic examination concluded that the injury caused by Ms. Nguyen Thi L. was 25%; for Ms. Nguyen Thi T. it was 14%.
At the trial, the defendant admitted to the crime. Defendant Sang stated that because he was in need, he had the idea of breaking into Ms. L’s house to steal property. Then, when the victims reacted, the defendant used a knife to slash them.
Considering the defendant's behavior to be especially dangerous, the panel sentenced Chu Van Sang to 13 years in prison for murder and 7 years in prison for robbery. The defendant was ordered to serve a total sentence of 20 years in prison.
