(Baonghean.vn) - AFP, citing Chinese media reports on June 16, said the world's highest mountain has shifted 3 cm southwest due to the earthquake that devastated Nepal in April.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake reversed the mountain's gradual northeastward shift, according to the government-run China Daily, citing the National Bureau of Surveying, Mapping and Geographic Information. Prior to the earthquake, Everest had shifted 40 centimeters northeast over the past decade, at a rate of 4 centimeters per year, the report stated.

The mountain also grew by 3 cm during the same period. The earthquake triggered an avalanche that killed 18 people and devastated the Everest base camp. This natural disaster immediately forced authorities in China and Nepal to cancel all climbing activities this year on the mountain known as the 'roof of the world' located on the border between the two countries.

According to the China Daily, the 7.3 magnitude earthquake on May 12 in Nepal did not cause Mount Everest to move.
