Phu Quoc fish sauce is protected in the EU.

On the morning of August 19th, in Phu Quoc Island District (Kien Giang province), Mr. Franz Jessen, Ambassador and Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Vietnam, presented the representative of the Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Association with a certificate of origin protection for "Phu Quoc Fish Sauce" in the EU, in the presence of leaders from the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the People's Committee of Kien Giang province.

Phu Quoc fish sauce is the first product from ASEAN countries to be officially protected under a designation of origin in the 28 EU member states, and the first product from Vietnam to be recognized and protected by a geographical indication. This significant achievement was made possible with the technical support of the MUTRAP Project.

With the protected designation of origin “Phu Quoc” (PDO “Phu Quoc”) in the EU, only fish sauce produced and bottled in Phu Quoc island district can be distributed to the EU market under the designation of origin “Phu Quoc”. This ensures consumers purchase genuine, high-quality products and prevents counterfeit Phu Quoc fish sauce from entering the EU market.

Speaking at the PDO “Phu Quoc” certification ceremony, Mr. Fanz Jessen stated: “Being certified for the protection of the geographical indication “Phu Quoc Fish Sauce” in the EU is a significant achievement. Previously, on July 15th, atmud(Kingdom of Belgium), this certification was awarded to Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Ho Thi Kim Thoa by the Directorate-General for Agriculture of the European Union.
