(Baonghean.vn) - While previously the biggest concern related to water in the suburban communes of Vinh City was clean water, now the issue of domestic wastewater has become urgent. The widespread lack of investment in drainage ditches, or inconsistent investment across inter-commune, inter-hamlet, inter-block, and inter-village roads, has led to a situation where each household is fending for its own water supply, resulting in serious environmental pollution.

Ms. Hoa Ly's house in Hamlet 15, Nghi Phu, is located on a fairly large road, Hoang Phan Thai Street in Vinh City. However, during construction, repairs, and upgrades, the city failed to consider the need for drainage ditches on both sides of the road. Therefore, Ms. Ly had to dig a manhole about 1 square meter in size right in front of her house to collect wastewater. Over time, the sewage fills up, and a foul odor permeates her home. The sight of manholes in front of houses is quite common on this street, because with rising land prices and the proliferation of narrow, multi-story houses, many families no longer have space to properly drain their household wastewater.

For decades, the Han and Thuy family in Hamlet 15, Nghi Phu, have been discharging their household wastewater into the pond next to their house. Over time, the pond water has become stagnant, black, and foul-smelling. Worst of all, many families here don't have access to piped water, so well water is their primary source. Gradually, the water has developed a foul odor, turned yellow when pumped up, and is undrinkable.

Currently, many main roads in wards and communes lack drainage systems, such as Ho Tong Thoc, Hoang Phan Thai, Truong Van Linh, and Pham Dinh Toai... The connecting roads to these roads are also in the same situation. In some suburban hamlets in Nghi Phu, Quan Bau, and Quan Banh, residents have dug their own drainage ditches for rainwater and wastewater, but some areas have dug them while others haven't, causing blockages in sections. During the rainy season, wastewater overflows into houses, blackening the walls.

Residents in the city's suburbs are hoping that, in addition to investing in major roads, the city will also develop a synchronized drainage system to prevent environmental pollution and improve their quality of life.
