(Baonghean.vn) - At the foot of the majestic Sao Va waterfall in Hamlet 1, Tien Phong Commune, Que Phong District, Mr. Tran Dinh Son decided to set up a plot of land to raise wild ducks. These animals quickly adapted to the challenging terrain, providing his family with a substantial income.

Following the district's agricultural officials, and navigating numerous slopes, we arrived at Mr. Son's house, located next to Sao Va waterfall. Of his 3-hectare integrated farm, he uses 1 hectare to dig two ponds and build enclosures for raising wild ducks, numbering up to 7,000 birds, completely covering the pond area.

According to a farmer from Dien Lam, Dien Chau, after visiting various economic models and following news reports, he realized that raising wild ducks was suitable for the local climate, soil, and water resources. He decided to start a trial with 1000 wild ducks, and after 6 months, he began selling them. This is a commercially raised duck breed with delicious meat, popular with many people, selling for 130,000 VND/kg, higher than other common poultry. From there, he decided to expand the area and invest in breeding stock to raise a large number for daily sale.

Mr. Son's total duck flock is 7,000, and he plans to increase it further in the near future.

Mr. Son said that raising wild ducks has many advantages. Wild ducks are well-suited to the natural conditions here, have high resistance to disease, and are less prone to outbreaks. Besides, the cost of raising them is lower than other types of ducks because they don't require much feed. Their main food consists of small fish, duckweed, grass, etc., and they can forage for food on their own when not being cared for. This is a popular commercial duck breed, so even with high prices, the market remains stable. The only difficulty is that due to their natural habitat, wild ducks sometimes get lost in the hills and mountains.

Mr. Son's wild ducks are supplied to restaurants in Vinh, Hanoi, Nghia Dan, and Que Phong. In Que Phong, a border region, he opened a restaurant on Highway 48, right at the foot of Sao Va waterfall, to serve tourists. Currently, his family sells about 40 ducks daily. On average, they sell over 1,000 ducks per month at the current market price of 130,000 VND/kg (each duck weighs about 1kg when sold), bringing his family over 120 million VND per month. After deducting the costs of raising the ducks (feed, vaccinations averaging 50,000 VND/duck), the net profit is approximately 70 million VND per month.

Mr. Son said that he plans to increase the total number of ducks in the near future and also raise laying ducks to supply breeding stock to local people.

Mr. Lu Van Tien, head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Que Phong district, said: "Mr. Tran Dinh Son's wild duck farming model is one of the effective and exemplary economic models of the district, bringing high income. The district always encourages people to experiment with economically valuable livestock and creates all conditions for farming to contribute to poverty reduction, stabilizing lives, especially for ethnic minorities in border areas."
