Housekeepers stealing property from their employers is no longer a new problem. However, this situation is becoming more and more complicated with many forms and methods of theft and fraud to appropriate property in a sophisticated manner.

The most recent incident happened at the end of August, when the family of Mr. Tuan Anh, residing in Co Nhue ward, Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi, discovered that the 46-year-old maid had stolen property.

Accordingly, through an acquaintance, Mr. Tuan Anh's family hired Ms. Le Thi T, from Van Thang commune (Ba Vi district, Hanoi) to be a housekeeper. Ms. T had only been working at the house for a week when the assets such as clothes, earrings, glasses, worth tens of millions of Dong of Mr. Tuan Anh and his wife "disappeared".

The family suspected Ms. T and questioned her, but Ms. T swore that she did not dare... When Mr. Tuan Anh asked Ms. T to check her luggage with the family present, Mr. Tuan Anh discovered that all the stolen property was hidden in 3 bags that T brought with her. At this time, Ms. T had to confess her greed.

After discovering the incident, Mr. Tuan Anh only then realized that he had hired a blind man with a previous conviction for theft to live with his family. Because of the pity of Ms. T, who was poor and had no husband or children, Mr. Tuan Anh's family did not report this behavior to the police but instead made Ms. T sign a commitment and let her quit her job and return to her hometown.

More cunningly, the maid of Ms. Ngo Thi Nga, residing in Dinh Thon (My Dinh 1 ward, Nam Tu Liem district, Hanoi) staged a fake theft scene to deceive the homeowner.

According to Ms. Nga's report to the police, on the night of April 15, her house went to sleep without closing the bedroom door on the 3rd floor, and a thief broke in and stole 18 million VND in cash and 349 USD, which she left in a handbag on top of the safe.

The next morning, Ms. Nga went to the 5th floor to burn incense and discovered that the door to the terrace was not closed. Outside, in the yard where clothes were dried, there were 2 women's handbags, one was hers and the other belonged to the maid named Nguyen Thi Hien. Checking her handbag, Ms. Nga discovered that all the belongings inside had disappeared.

When calling the maid to ask, Hien looked miserable because she herself had also lost a 3-tael necklace that she had put inside her handbag.

While the investigation agency was actively collecting evidence, verifying and clarifying the case, this maid suddenly asked her employer to let her quit her job to go back to her hometown to take care of her sick relative and not work anymore. At the same time, with evidence collected at the scene and some professional measures, Nam Tu Liem District Police forced Nguyen Thi Hien to confess to all acts of property theft and intentionally creating a fake scene to mislead the investigation agency.

A more typical incident occurred at Ms. Mai's hair salon on Xuan Dinh Street (Bac Tu Liem, Hanoi). Accordingly, on December 16, 2015, through a recruitment newspaper, Ms. Mai hired a person who claimed to be named Phuong, from Hai Duong, to work as an assistant at her salon. At noon that same day, Ms. Mai invited Phuong to go to the market to buy food. When passing by the orange shop, Phuong used the excuse of "celebrating being hired" to buy 5 oranges to take home.

After having lunch with Ms. Mai, Phuong mixed orange juice and put sleeping pills in it for Ms. Mai to drink. Knowing that the homeowner was under the influence of sleeping pills, Phuong stole the wallet containing 6 million VND, ATM card and many personal documents and then ran away. The police of Bac Tu Liem district (Hanoi) later clarified that the suspect was Tran Thi Le (32 years old), from Hung Yen, not Phuong, from Hai Duong as initially introduced.

Through the above cases, it can be seen that the situation of domestic workers stealing property in the home of the homeowner is becoming more and more complicated, the main reason is that the "victim" did not pay attention to the recruitment of domestic workers carefully. Especially the gullibility in the process of living together, the homeowner rarely controls, so they do not detect early the bad habits, vices, and dishonest behavior in the daily life of the domestic worker, which leads to bigger consequences.

Not only stopping at acts of theft and fraud to appropriate the property of the homeowner, there have been some cases where domestic workers in wealthy families have even set up "love" traps for their employers to blatantly blackmail them. More seriously, there are domestic workers who are willing to deceive their employers, kidnap their children to threaten them, and extort their property.

Therefore, to avoid this situation, each family when wanting to hire a maid, needs to investigate relatives clearly, have identity papers, and clear background. Besides, to ensure safety, each family should equip themselves with a secret surveillance camera at home, to prevent the worst situations that may occur.

Homeowners must also be vigilant and should not be complacent in handing over all the work and housework to the maid; private rooms must be locked; personal belongings and valuable assets must be carefully protected, not creating loopholes for the maid's greed to arise...
