"The main message I want to send to you... and the message I've given in Europe is don't see things in the worst light," Reuters quoted US President Barack Obama as saying yesterday to young leaders at an exchange in the capital Lima, Peru, where the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit is taking place.
"Please wait until the new administration is stable and its policies are clearly outlined, then you can evaluate whether they are consistent with the interests of the international community so that we can live together in peace and prosperity," Mr. Obama said.
"It's important for everyone around the world right now to not rush to judgment, but to give the president-elect a chance to put together his team, to consider the issues, and to decide on future policies, because as I've said, how you run for office is never the same as how you govern," President Obama stressed.
During his election campaign, billionaire Donald Trump proposed many controversial policies, such as building a wall on the US-Mexico border, abolishing free trade agreements, and banning Muslims from immigrating to the US.
To reassure allies and anxious people around the world, Mr. Obama spoke up to ensure that the transition of power would go smoothly, and expressed confidence that the US president-elect would change his mind about confusing policies when faced with real work.
